I need a list of the major awards or prizes given in the U.S. (by the
U.S. or any State government, private foundations, universities,
cultural organizations, or other institutions) that recognizes
institutions or individuals for their work in:
(1) international development (including health, education, economic
development, etc.)
(2) improving cultural understanding.
The awardees should preferably not be limited to U.S.-based
institutions or individuals. |

cambridge1-ga,
Thanks for your question. There are zillions of awards and prizes
offered, and large, printed directories are available that cover many
of them. But your question asked for 'major' awards, and I wanted to
get some clarification of what you had in mind.
Here is a list of major awards in a wide variety of areas:

Prizes and Awards
Could you look this over, and let me know which among them is of
interest to you. That way, I could have a better feel for the
major-ness of the awards you're seeking, and the type of awards that
best suit your interests.
Thanks,

pafalafa-ga,
Thank you for reviewing my question. The type of award I am looking
for would be at the level that would be appropriate to bestow upon a
head of state or other major leader or an international organization,
such as the Red Cross.
Of the awards listed on the website you referred me to, the following
would rise to this level in my opinion: the Pulitzer Prize, Alfred
DuPont-Columbia University Awards and the JFK Library Profile in
Courage Award (I would also have included the Nobel Prize in this
list, if the organization had been based in the U.S.). Other awards
along these lines would be the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the
Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the Carnegie Medal for Philantrophy,
etc.
I hope this is helpful.
