There is a picture (painting or engraving)of an older man in 19th
century dress. He is standing on a "ladder" in front of book shelves
in a large library, and I think he is holding a book in his hand.
What is the title and artist's name?

I'm glad to have been able to identify your painting as "The
Bookworm," by Carl Spitzweg.

"Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) (after)
 The Book Worm
 Continental: early 20th Century
Signed in pencil by etcher, lower right
 Hand colored etching
 14.5 x 5.5 inches, plate mark
 20.75 x 15.5 inches, sheet
 $400

This popular image of a contemplative elderly gentleman standing on a
ladder in a library, with books tucked under his arm and between his
legs, was often engraved in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and
still sold as posters today. The original painting was created in 1850
and is now in the collection of the Milwaukee Public Library,
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, donated by a collector who also gave several
Spitzweg paintings to the Milwaukee Art Museum."
