For an analysis of neighborhood racial diversity, I'm looking for a
breakdown of racial/ethnic populations (e.g. percent white, black,
hispanic, asian) according to zip code or other neighborhood indicator
for the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. I need to examine
differences from one neighborhood to another; broader city- or
county-wide statistics are not adequate.

mediamaven-ga,

Thanks for an interesting question, but I want to make sure were on
the same page in terms of what you need. Specifically, I'd like a bit
more input as to geographical coverage, level of detail, and format.

--When you ask for NoVa suburbs of Washington DC, what did you have in
mind? All of Fairfax County? Broader? Closer in? Other counties?
Some parameters would help focus the work.

--I found a breakout of Farifax County into about 15 sub-county zones,
such as Annandale, McLean, Bailey's, Mt. Vernon, Fairfax, Vienna, etc.
Would that be an appropriate level of detail?

--The diversity data for each area look like this:

Annandale

Population by Race

........All Persons.....Non-Hispanic.....Hispanic

Total: .....70,152 ........61,798........ 8,354
White: .....47,457 ........43,182........ 4,275
Black: ..... 3,645........ 3,566........... 79
Asian/Pac...12,936........ 12,904 ...........32
Other race: .3,654 ...........310 ........3,344
2/more races 2,460......... 1,836 ..........624

Does that work for you?

=======

In general, I'm just looking for a bit more guidance as to how to get
you the best answer to your question. Any additional feedback would
be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Unfortunately I need data for much smaller areas, so I can track the
degree to which increasing suburban diversity in counties and cities
is reflected within individual neighborhoods.

The Nova suburban area consists of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier,
Loudoun, and Prince William counties and the independent cities of
Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park.

Thanks for your interest.

mediamaven-ga,

Thanks for getting back to me.

It's a relatively straightforward task to get racial diversity data
for individual zip codes, and for all the zip codes in a county, say.

However, the five counties and five cities you listed that make up the
NoVa suburbs probably contain close to a thousand zip codes.

I haven't been able to find an automated way to extract all the
relevant information. I can put together tables of zip code groups
like this one in Fairfax County:

http://home.ripway.com/2005-3/279856/fairfaxcounty220xxrace-hispanic.jpg

and I'd be glad to show you how such a table can readily be constructed.

However, I cannot justify covering the entire NoVa territory, as too
many hours of work are involved, even for a generously-priced question
such as this one.

Take a look at the above link, and let me know what you think.

Unfortunately I really wanted to get a breakdown by individual
zipcodes, tho I dont know whether that's possible, not knowing whether
you aggregated these into your clusters. But what is absolutely
necessary, alas, is to cover the entire NOVA area.

I really appreciate your efforts, and I understand that it's just not
worth the time for someone who doesnt have a special research interest
in the topic. I guess I dont know where we go from here, as this is
the first time I have used this service.

Thanks for the quick reply. Hang in there for another round or two of
comments, and let's see if we can work something out.

I was a mite confused by your comment, when you said:

<<I really wanted to get a breakdown by individual zipcodes, tho I
dont know whether that's possible, not knowing whether you aggregated
these into your clusters...>>

Just to be clear, it absolutely IS possible to get the zip code by zip
code breakdown...that's exactly what I provided in the link I gave
you:

http://home.ripway.com/2005-3/279856/fairfaxcounty220xxrace-hispanic.jpg

which shows breakouts for 9 zip codes in Fairfax County.

The obstacle we have now is creating similar lists for every single
zip code in NoVa.

This would be a large task. I can instruct you how to do it, if you
care to put in the time and effort.

But I can't offer to compile a full list myself.

Does that clarify things?

Let me know if you're interested in having me answer your question by
providing the how-to instructions for: (1) identifying all zip codes
in your area of interest and (2) creating lists similar to the one in
the link for all the relevant zips.

Cheers,

paf

P.S. All this is presuming that the data in the link is what you're
after...please confirm if this is the case.

Sorry, I misread your table (now you see why I needed help). I see now
that it contains individual zipcode data. Of course I had hoped to
receive such data for all zipcodes, but I certainly understand about
the time involved. So if, in your judgment, this needs to be done
manually, I will accept information on how to find the data and
construct the tables as the best reasonable solution.
