Dear teleparis-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. The
dog?s owner was a Thames river barge worker named David Corbett.

?In March 1966 The Football Association suffered the indignity of
having the trophy stolen from a stamp fair being held at Central Hall,
London. Worried that the trophy would never be recovered Joe Mears,
Chairman of the FA, approached Stanley Rous, President of FIFA, and
asked for permission to make a replica trophy. FIFA, possibly aware of
the copyright implications, refused the request.

Days later the original trophy was recovered, famously found by
?Pickles? the dog whilst being walked by owner Dave Corbett.?

?A guest of special honour at the hotel was Pickles, the mongrel who
found the Jules Rimet trophy after it had been stolen earlier this
year. He was taken along by his owner, Mr David Corbett.?

?The World Cup resumed in 1950 and the trophy led a quiet life until
1966, when it was stolen while on display in London as England
prepared to stage soccer's showcase event. The theft set off a
nationwide search. A week after it disappeared, a Thames River barge
worker, David Corbett, strolled outside his London apartment to make a
phone call, accompanied by his dog, Pickles.?
