Who are some successful/famous scientists or biologists that did not have any formal training in their field or even a college degree? I have already came up with Edison, Galileo, Pasteur and Da Vinci from a simple Google search. |

I don't know what Einstein's training was, but if I recall correctly he was working in a telegraph office when he developed Relativity. |

Charles Darwin (evolution) trained as a physician and theologian; Michael Faraday (electromagnetism) was essentially self-taught: Louis Agassiz (geology and paleontology) trained as a physician. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Darwin http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Faraday.html http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/agassiz.html |

Correction about Einstein. He had a college diploma in mathematics and physics when he began working at the Swiss patent office. He earned his doctorate in physics in the same year (1905) that he wrote his first paper on relativity. |

Gregor Mendel (Geneticist) was a monk...and since he first explained the model of inheritance of traits I don't think it's possible he had any training. |
