Question ID: 589251
I'm looking for a flatbed scanner for scanning pages from a photo
album. The pages are 11" x 14" and I'd like to scan them as single
images. I'd be interested in purchasing or renting a unit -- more
likely renting if the units are more than $750 or so. Needs to be USB
or firewire and Mac-friendly.

Howdy mrfrog-ga,

Would something such as the following work for you?
http://www.zones.com/cgi-bin/zones/site/product/index.html?id=000887569

"...
Product Description Epson GT 15000 - flatbed scanner
Device Type Flatbed scanner
Max Supported Media Size 11.7 in x 17 in
...
Price: $1,398.98
Lease Price $43.62/Mo.
..."

Least expensive purchase price I could find was $1,075.15.

If the above will do as an answer for you, please tell and I will post
it as such. Thanks!

Hmm, that might do the trick -- did you see anything with better Mac support?

Also, did you notice any rental options?

(In response to comment re: Kinko's) The materials in question are old
family albums that I'd rather not give to an outside service.

Howdy mrfrog-ga,

There is the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL, priced at $1048.57.

Microtek ScanWizard Pro (PC/Mac) with LANShare networking utility (PC)
Microtek ICC Profiler (PC/Mac)
Kodak Color Management software (PC/Mac)
ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR (PC/Mac)
Ulead Photo Explorer (PC/Mac)
Adobe Acrobat Reader (PC/Mac)
..."

If you shop around, you can get it for closer to $1000. I think finding
a place to rent one from will be tough, but you might want to call some
of the office, computer or camera places near you and see if they do such
things.

Otherwise, a lease is the closest I can find. Here is an example for the
Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL.
http://www.zones.com/cgi-bin/zones/site/product/index.html?id=000570581

"Lease Price $36.01/Mo"

Maybe you could lease it and then rent it out to large format photographers.

Howdy Tor,

I appreciate you accepting this as an answer.

As you know, the choices for a large flatbed scanner, expecially with a
firewire connection, are either expensive, or more expensive. In the "just
under $1,100" category, these appear to be the two choices.

There is the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL, priced at $1048.57, from PROVANTAGE.

Search strategy:

Google Froogle search on: scanner "large format"
http://froogle.google.com/froogle?price1=750&price2=1%2C100.00&&q=scanner+%22large+format%22

I limited the above search to a price range of between $750 and $1100.

Thank you for the answer -- could have used more info on rental
options, but it sounds like there may simply not be any.

Have you thought of taking your scanning job to a service such as Kinko's?

Hi there!

That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Wish it were a few
hundred cheaper, of course... :-)

Thank you for the research.
