I am looking for some information on a Personality Disorder category
that I believe was not included in any editions of the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual. The name is Self -Defeating Personality Disorder
and is defined by the British Psych site at the following address:
http://www.psychnet-uk.com/clinical_psychology/criteria_personality_masochistic.htm...
My question is : What happened to this Diagnosis, as it was included
in several psychoanalytic texts in the 1990's? I THINK that it was
not accepted into the DSM because of pressure from feminist groups
over the way it presented women in abusive relationships, but I would
like to know if it was definitively barred, and if so, was it
incorporated into another diagnosis in DSM - iV. Let me know if you
need more clarification.
Thanks!
Scott

Google's cached edition of Wikidpedia's article on personality disorders notes:

"The previous version of the DSM also contained the Passive-Aggressive
Personality Disorder and the Self-Defeating Personality Disorder.
Passive-aggressive personality disorder is a pattern of negative
attitudes and passive resistance in interpersonal situations.
Self-defeating personality disorder is characterised by behaviour that
consequently undermines the person's pleasure and goals. These
categories were removed in the current version of the DSM, because it
is questionable whether these are separate disorders."

There was also a special article published in the American Journal of
Psychiatry (Am J Psychiatry 1989; 146:1022-1026) outlining the debate
concerning the inclusion of self-defeating personality disorder in
DSM-III-R.
