Question ID: 58981
I need the name, address, email of "medium-sized" distributors of
skin-care and beauty cosmetic products to WHOLESALERS and RETAIL SPAS
AND BEAUTY SALONS in the USA. I need 8 or 9 major geographical
areas(e.g.north-east,chicago and mid-west,south-east, Texas and south,
south-west,southern California,north-west,New York). Each distributor
should be servicing between 1,500 and 4,000 retail outlets, and also a
number of wholesalers. Two examples of the exact type of distributor I
am looking for are PBS - Professional Beauty Supplies - out of
Baltimore,Md.which services 2,500 Retail Spas and Beauty Salons and 6
wholesalers in the states
of Maryland,Virginia,West Virginia and Delaware and Meehan which
services about 1,200 outlets in Nevada and a little in Utah. These
"distributors" are sometimes als "wholesalers". What is important is
the number of retail outlets they service. Please note we are not
interested in the BIGGEST suppliers ( there are about 8-10 in the USA
which control a good bit of the market) but the SECOND-TIER
MEDIUM-SIZED DISTRIBUTORS.

Hi,
So, you don't want the manufacturer, you want the distributor.
So,are you talking companies Like Sally Beauty Supply Co? I know of
many many companies across the US that sell products to Salons and
Spas, and it would only take me a few days to acquire the information
you asked for. The beauty industry is something I'm very involved
in..... Now, are you looking for specific lines of product, or just
anyone who sells beauty supplies. Professional lines only or does it
matter? Like I know Sally Beauty would be one of them, but they sell
to not only salon and spas, but the public as well. However, a company
like Peel's sells only to Salons, Spas, and licenced cosmotologests,
nail techs, esthaticians, etc. What are the regions you want figures
for....? Could you name them for me so I could be sure to get the
right ones you want. I have to work all day today, but I'll get to
this question soon as I get a clarification. If another researcher can
beat me to the punch, more power to them.....But I'll be awaiting your
clarification.

Sally Beauty Supply is one of the 3 biggest in the USA - NOT what I
want.I want medium size such as PBS in the geographical areas
mentioned already ( or similar, they don't have to be EXACTLY those
areas).Am prepared to wait a couple of days for you to get the
required info. Don't want any companies selling directly to the
public. PBS is the perfect example. Also Peel's sounds like what we
want - professional sales to spas and beauty salons, aesthetologists,
cosmotologists etc. These medium-sized companies should have their own
sales force ( about 20 -50 persons) visiting the spas and salons. We
want companies handling general professional beauty supplies, but it
won't hurt if they also handle skin-care products. The main emphasis
is that the distributor companies are neither too big nor too small,
and are active. Thankyou, David

Ok then, thanks for clearing that up for me. I will be getting started
on this very soon and should have an answer for you within the next
few days. If I decide I can not get the information you want, I'll
come back and let you know so another researcher could take over. I
don't want to hold anyone off.

Hi again,
I've been working on this for about 4 hours now, collecting
information and contacting VP's of operation for the companies.
However, it's going to take a few days to get this all going....so,
just to let you know I'll keep at it, and will keep you updated with
my progress...

hahambelaila:

There are lots of manufacturers representative groups who respresent
lines, suprisingly, to all sizes of distributors (including Sally).
This may be a way to go to get your product into the distribution
channel more quickly since they already have the contacts and the
relationships AND are always looking for good lines and know how to
place them. I'll wait for nenna's answer then add this information as
well if you wish.

Hello, First off, before I start answering this question, let me tell
you what geographical regions I broke the states down into. I did not
include Alaska and Hawaii in this.
#1. New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
#2. Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland
#3 Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and
Washington DC ( Yes, I know it's not a state, but.....I'm sure it's in
the counts.)
#4 Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina,
Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana
#5 Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois
#6 North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin
#7 Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming
#8 California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas

Also, I found out which suppliers were used by calling salons in these
regions, and asking them, because I thought the information would be
best coming straight from the "Horse's mouth". I knew a number of
supply houses already, however, I wanted to make sure I got a good #
of them for each region.

Now, how I'm going to do this is start with region #1, and so on, and
list the distributors for that area that meet the criteria, their
contact information, and on average, how many salons they sell to.

REGION 1:
NY, ME, VT, NH, MA

CBS Supply( see region 4)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
CB Sullivan
C. B. Sullivan Company, Inc......
15 West Alice Avenue
Hooksett, New Hampshire 03106 toll free: 800-321-2889
phone: 603-624-4752
fax: 800-428-6954
<http://www.cbsullivan.com/index.html>
They have stores in ME, MA, NH, VT They also have stores in TX, and
RI, but I'll talk about those in those regional areas. For this region
they have 22 stores. I spoke with Tony Farruci, VP of operations, who
told me he could not release the average # of salons the stores sell
to. I did however, talk to an employee at the Brewer, ME store, who
said she would estimate her store has between 200-300 salons that
frequent their store. She also said a lot of the stores have the same
salons going into more than one location, so take that into
consideration.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Professional Beauty Supply, or PBS
1-207-878-2722
They have 2 stores located in Portland and Augusta ME. Once again,
they could not give me an average figure on the # of salons they sell
to. I'm thinking that this is either not public information,
or....they just do not keep the information in their databases.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emiliani
1-800-624-0405
<http://www.beauty-net.com/>
Once again, i was not able to get the information on the average # of
salons, because, Over the last week, out of the 15 times I attempted a
phone call, I've gotten a busy signal. However, I did learn that they
had stores in 2 counties in NY. One of the salons that I spoke with in
NY said they are a VERY popular supply house in NY.

Also, one of the BIG chains that a lot of salons get their supplies
from in Sally's. It was mentioned to me a # of times, but, being that
it is one of the top 10, I did not collect the information from that
store.

REGION #2
RI, CT, NJ, DE, MD

Once again Emilani....( See region 1) They also have , in addition to
their stores in 2 counties in NY, they have stores in 7 counties in NJ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACE Beauty Supply (609) 239-8766
<http://acebeautysupply.micronpcweb.com/>
There are 2 different salon supply houses called ACE. This one is
located in NJ. However, there is also a chain of them in the
southeastern states as well, which have no bearing on this one. They
said they sell to between 100 and 200 salons by name, with about 100
more independent professionals as well. They do not have an online
ordering capability.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, also, CB Sullivan
(See region 1)
They have one RI store in Cranston.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Also Schoeneman Supply
<http://www.schoeneman.com/>
1-800-832-3334
For this region, Schoneman has one Delaware store, averaging 500
Salons, and 5 New Jersey stores, averaging 250-350 Salons and
professionals. This information was collected from store level
employees and not the home office. In my quest, I found it was much
better to talk to store level than corporate.

REGION #3
MI, IN, OH, WV, VA, PA, DC
Schoeneman Supply( See region 2)
In this region Schoeneman has 32 stores in PA, which Avg...... 100 or
so salons apiece. Please note that some of the stores share salons
which mean that 1 salon may go to more than 1 location. In WV, they
have 3 stores, which Avg...... approx....... 200 salons.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
State Beauty Supply
1-888-792-2928
<http://www.statebeauty.com/public/pages/public.htm>
State Beauty supply has many locations in many regions. For this
region, they have 5 stores in IN. State also has outside sales reps,
which shares sales with the stores. I spoke with Vicki in the Omaha,
NE store for the average figures and she said that she would say that
State averages about 300 salons per store in the states where there is
more than 1 store location.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Marlo
<http://www.marlobeauty.com/>
1-800-333-9499
Marlo beauty Supply has 11 stores all in the Detroit MI area, and I
spoke with a store level employee in the Oak Park store, who said that
she thinks they Avg..... 50-100 Salons per store.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Premier Supply
<http://www.premierbeautysupply.com/>
1-800-722-6462
Premier Supply is located in IL, and OH, with 3 stores in IL, and 9 in
OH. They also have, included in their family, Marshall Supply, which
has 5 stores in IL. I spoke with a few of the Ohio stores, and they
said they would estimate 100-200 salons would be the stores' average.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CBS Supply ( See region 4)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
REGION #4
MS, AL, GA, SC, FL, NC, KY, TN

CBS
<http://www.cbslink.com/>
1-800-888-1825
CBS is located in 6 states. Ga, SC, NC, TN, VA, and MA. They have 24
stores total in these areas. I contacted Bob Barnett, VPof Operations,
and he referred me to Scoot Reed. I have been playing VoiceMail "tag"
with Mr. Reed and have been unable to get a hold of him over the last
few days. Here is his direct line, in case you would like to contact
him. 1-800-688-0170 Evt. 167 They seem to be very willing to help out
with this question.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACE Supply
1-800-972-9592
This supply chain has no bearing on the other "ACE" we mentioned
earlier. They are one of the well known suppliers in the SE with 48
stores in FL, AL, and GA. They recently acquired the supply chains of
Atlantic, JH, and Mid-City into their company as well. From the #'s I
acquired talking to a # of store level employees, they Avg...... about
400 salons per store, with some sharing....depending on location, I
was told some could have 500, some could have 50. I was unable to
locate a web site for this company, as I could not seem to get a hold
of a customer service representative.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wynn Supply
1-800-282-9686
<http://www.wynnsalon.com/default.cfm>
Wynn Supply has 8 location is AL (2), GA (5), and SC (1), They
employee 90 FT employees as of 2000. I talked to Shawna Vaughn,
1-770-952-7435, who states that the avg..... # f salons would be 300
per store approx......

REGION #5
NE, IA, KS, OK, MO, IL

Peels
1-800-362-2084
<http://peels.com/>
"Peels Salon Services was founded in 1939 by Peel’s grandfather and a
partner in Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1947, Peel’s father became sole
owner of the company, a small barber supply business with annual sales
of $100,000. Today, it is a $60 million company with 39
professional-only stores and more than 100 sales consultants who
service more than 20,000 salons in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri,
Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and
Wyoming. The company is also a major distributor of salon equipment
and furniture, and has partnered with Xenon in three beauty schools
that have trained more than 2000 professional students."

National Salon Resource
1-800-331-3100
<http://customerservace>@nationalsalon.com/
National is affiliated with BeautyMart, whom they bought out in
99-2000. They have stores locates in MN, WI, ND, SD, NE, IA and KS.
Having worked for this company before, I can tell you that they
average 50-100 salons per store, with the outside sales reps acquiring
many more. The person you would contact if you needed more information
than this would be Tim Egan. They also have a ordering by phone
system, which attracts many more salons that are not coming in and
doing sales at the store level. The Omaha, NE store I know, runs some
of their phone business. Once again, Tim Egan would be the person to
talk to.

West Coast

Has stores in 13 western states. They are a large distributor, so I
was not sure if you wanted them included, however, I did because it
seems that a lot of states on the west coast, Esp.... the NW, are very
limited in mid sized supply houses. Sally's and West Coast has a lot
of the business up there.
When I contacted West Coast They told me they could not release the
information to the public that I needed.

Ball Beauty Supply
1-323-655-0244
<http://www.ballbeauty.com/>
I was told by a store level employee that they had 10-50 salons, and a
huge online salon ordering business. However, when i continued to ask
questions, a manager grabbed the phone, and stated they could not
release this information.Their 1 store is located in Los Angeles, CA

Now, I'm also going to mention a few places I could not get much info
on, and some other facts I found out in this search.

Mid City Supply-- 9 IL locations, and sales reps in IL and IN
Royal Supply--9 locations in Al, GA, TN, WV, VA, KY, and NC
ISR-- 12 stores in FL
Gulf States--16 locations in FL, TN, AL, LA, GA, and MS

Also, a # of these, while operating "independently" belong to a
company called Beauty Alliance
Those chains are...
State, Ace, Wynn, Gulf States, ISR, Mid City and Royal.

I hope this helps you out and gives you the information you needed. If
you need any additional information or some clarification, feel free
to ask and I'll get right to it.
