The insurgent death count is very hard to calculate. It seems to range from 5,000 to 50,000 depending on who you ask and how they calculate it. The issues in counting include: Political reasons to skew the #s 1 way or the other We don't always know if the dead person was an insurgent It was US policy to not count the Iraqi dead up until recently From the low figure of 5,000, that is 2.5 insurgents per 1 US soldier. From the high figure of 50,000, that is 25 insurgents per 1 US soldier... The truth is probably closer to the middle of the estimates than to either side (about 10 insurgents per US soldier perhaps). But do keep in mind there are other dead soldiers who were fighting along side the US (coalition forces) and there are also many innocent lives lost in the conflice. |

Dear politicalguru Many thanks for your freebie. In the brave new world of Thomas Friedman's "Flat World" freebies are rarer and rarer and so it was with great pleasure that I received your answer. I am however curious why the "Lancet" number for iraqi casualities is so high. (You don't have to answer this' :-)) Regards Mongolia |
