"The details of Columbus's ships - the Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta - remain lost to historians, for the ships were built before the first manuals of shipbuilding were written, and no documentation or illustration has survived." http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1844860140 |

On a wonderful Discovery Channel documentary last year, it was noted that the Basques (master ship builders at the time) built Columbus' ships. It was also said that the Basques learned their techniques from Viking ship builders. You can buy the DVD and read more here. (No mention of how long the ships took to build). Its a fascinating documentary. http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/columbus/columbus.html Regards, Crabcakes |

Using period methods, an accurate replica of the Nina was built recently in the British Virgin Islands. Yous hould take a look at the process at www.thenina.com I haven't fully explored the site, but it might answer your question. |
