Did the City of Chicago revise the building code to change building
requirements for porches, following a porch collapse in summer 2003?
If yes, where in the code (or elsewhere) are those changes set forth?

Dear mishmac-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. As the
commenter below indicated the laws were indeed amended following the
tragedy that occured, but you don?t have to go to the library to read
them. Here they are:

City of Chicago Municipal Code
Chapter 4-204
HOME REPAIRS
http://www.chicityclerk.com/legislation/codes/chapter4_204.html

10/01/03 REPORTS OF COMMITTEES 9163 JOINT COMMITTEE.

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

Thank you for finding the reports of committee identified by the
commenter. I am confused why you have attached Chapter 4-204, which
was not amended on October 1, 2003. Rather, parts of Section 13 of the
Code were amended.

Indeed. I included § 4.2 merely because it was referenced by the
commenter as one that you should consider viewing at your local
library. My actual primary interest in answering your question however
was to afford you an opportunity to view the committee's changes to
the City Ordinance (Municipal Code 13-52-090) without having to get
out to the library. Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, changes were made.

Check out Coun. J. 10-1-03, p. 9163, § 4.2 and Chicago Municipal Code 13-52-090.

You should be able to get the Coun. J. at the Municipal Collections
section of Harold Washington Library -- Chicago Public downtown.

Thank you. Upon further review, I see that the commenter meant
Section 4.2 of the 10/01/03 proceedings. Thanks for providing that
for me. What's so weird is that I was told by someone in the
inspections/building dept that the code hasn't changed in 10 years!

Thanks again for your help.

The buildings department is right in one sense. The printed version of
the code hasn't be done in about 10 years. Hence, the need to check
the Chicago Municipal Code online in MuniCode or at the Chicago Public
Library, which maintains any up to date hard copy.

I didn't try and search for a link to the Council Journal since
normally it is not maintained online for free other than last couple
of council meetings. Here a commercial entity happened to post it to
their web site.
