This song has the following lyrics. It was from a musical that had to
written before 1972. What is the name of the song and the musical
that it was in? Is a CD of it available anywhere? Thank you.
When I was born,
 I opened my eyes
And when I looked around
I closed them
And when I saw
How people were kicked in the head
And kicked in the belly
And kicked in the groin
I closed them
I closed them

My eyes are closed
But I?m carefree
Ho ho ho, ho ho ho
I?m carefree
I?m carefree

A poor man
Has fifty problems everyday
Fifty problems upon opening his eyes
Fifty problems every minute of the day

And life is sorrow
Life is sorrow
One thing a poor man has
That a rich man doesn?t have
Is fifty problems, fifty problems every day

When the wound is open
And the guts are hanging out
It hurts, It hurts
And it hurts as much,
And it hurts as much
When a man?s life
Is dark and narrow

A poor man doesn?t know
Where his pain comes from
Where it comes from
There is a dark hall
And a closed door
And a dirty old room
And he doesn?t know how he got there

A poor man?s life is sorrow
And he doesn?t know
Who made it so
And he doesn?t know
Who made it so

A poor man has to do what he?s told
He doesn?t know just why he does it
He just has to do what he?s told
He just has to do what he?s told
With a dirty word
Get off the street!
It?s you who has to fight the war!

And he?s kicked in the head
And kicked in the belly
And kicked in the groin
A poor has to do what he?s told
He doesn?t know just why he does it
He just has to do what he?s told
He just has to do what he?s told

I know what madness is
It?s not knowing how another man feels
A madman?s never been in another man?s shoes

Madness is lack of compassion
And there?s little compassion in the world
Madness is lack of compassion
And there?s little compassion in the world

It?s only stupid things
That make a madman feel sure
Money, power, admiration
Never just being alive
Having two feet on the ground
And having heart to give
Having heart to give

Never just walking down the street
Or picking an apple from a tree
Never just lying on the ground
Lying on the ground
And looking up at the sky
Never doing a square dance
In the middle of July
It?s only stupid things
That make a madman feel sure
Never, never, never, never
Never just being alive?alive
Never just being alive

I know what madness is
It?s not knowing how another man feels
A madman?s never been in another man?s shoes.

When I was born,
 I opened my eyes
And when I looked around
I closed them
And when I saw
How people were kicked in the head
And kicked in the belly
And kicked in the groin
I closed them
I closed them

My eyes are closed
But I?m carefree
Ho ho ho, ho ho ho
I?m carefree
I?m carefree

Hi zedrick19,

The lyrics are from the song "A Poor Man", from the play "Promenade",
first performed by the Judson Poets Theatre in New York in 1965.

Three copies are available from Amazon Marketplace (one New for
$49.99, one in Very Good condition for $44.99, and one Like New for
$42.99).

Amazon link:

Promenade (1969 Original Off-Broadway Cast) [CAST RECORDING]
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000DFUU/ref=m_art_li_1/102-2780065-1743320?v=glance&s=music

Search strategy:

A Google search for "i know what madness is" and "musical", lead me to
this page about playwright 'Maria Irene Fornes' -
http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/1998/405/cu4.htm

Part of the lyrics are quoted in the second paragraph:
"I know what madness is," runs another lyric from Promenade: "Madness
is lack of compassion"..." ,
so I performed another search using the keywords "Maria Irene Fornes"
and "promenade" which lead me to the Amazon site. I verified the song
was "A Poor Man" by listening to the sample (song 14).

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Jackburton-ga
