Can't copy photos from SD card or camera to laptop ($5)

Datails:

I have a laptop running windows XP Pro and a Kodak digital camera, which
uses an SD card. My laptop has an SD card slot. When I try to copy
photos from the card to the hard drive, I get the message "Cannot copy
X, that parameter is incorrect".

I've tried copying directly from the camera via USB cable, once using
photos on the card and once with photos in the camera's internal
memory (thinking the card might be corrupted). I've reformatted the
camera and card.

The problem is not consistant. For a while I could copy one photo at
a time, but no more than that. The other day I was able to copy about
20 photos with no problem. Today I was able to copy 3 photos (one at
a time), and now I can't copy any.

Everything else on the computer is working fine. 20% of the hard drive
is empty, and in the last week I've defragmented, ran Disk Cleanup,
ran AdAware and Spybot.

Note: my goal is to be able to copy photos from the card, not from the camera.

Update: I tried a friend's SD card from HER camera... and had the same
problem. Her card works fine on her computer - it's brand new. So
the problem is not my card or camera, but my computer. Help!
