How much money does a business professor (with a PhD) expect to earn each year at an American college or university? I've found websites listing faculty salaries averaged across all majors, but none that specifically list business PhD salaries. I'd also like to get an idea of how much they normally earn each year from outside sources (consulting, journal articles, etc.). Also, how much of a difference in faculty pay is there among the various business subjects (finance vs. marketing vs. manangement, etc.)? My ideal answer would be something like http://chronicle.com/free/v50/i33/33a01301.htm, geared toward business, and listing average outside compensation. And it would explain the differences in pay among business subjects. But any answer that provides a realistic estimate of the total annual compensation for both assistant and full professors of business at both prestigious and non-prestigious colleges/universities will be sufficient. Thanks |

Because many states have public employee salaries posted (or available), you might try to look for your information this way. The top tier public schools pay competitively with what the privates pay--at least for faculty who are in demand and for new faculty. I believe the order is Finance > Accounting >> Management > Operations > Marketing but that might vary from institution to institution. |

Oh, and there is "off budget" salary that comes from the research account. This might be as small as $1500/year, but can be much, much larger for top faculty. This can be used for books, office, postage, travel, grad students, conferences, or electronic gadgets. |
