How are abrasive papers with silicon oxide or aluminum oxide abrasives
made? Specifically, I would like to know how a uniform layer of the
abrasive material is applied to the backing material. Please refer me
to any websites which may have information or illustrations.

To be more specific, I am interested in how the grit is deposited on
the paper. Gravity feed (sprinkling) of the powder has been used in
the past, but I understand some type of electrostatic deposition is
now used to provide uniform coverage and alignment of the grit. I
want to know if this is accurate and if possible find out who supplies
this type of production equipment.

As far as I know the backing paper or cloth is spread with an
adhesive. This will typically take the form of a sizing blade that
runs the width of the paper roll and evenly spreads the adhesive onto
the paper or cloth. It may then go through a steel roll to impregnate
the paper or cloth more evenly. the abrasvie particles or powder are
simply shaken onto the paper adhesive and passed through a drying /
curing oven. You probable want to check out the 3m website as they are
the expersts in this area and if you contact them they may provide
some more detailed info. Try this link as well.
