I misread the question - twice!

Here is a 2005 comment on the "why":

"The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported July 13 that Rhodes, which
filed for bankruptcy in November 2004, has suffered from inconsistent
leadership, a poor mix of products and the loss of talented employees.
Rhodes owes creditors $59.5 million, according to the report. Rhodes
was previously owned by Heilig-Meyers, a Richmond, Va.-based home
furnishings chain that bought the Homemakers stores in 1998.
Heilig-Meyers filed for bankruptcy five years ago and closed its
stores.

Homemakers tried to adapt 11 years ago by closing its upscale stores
and opening warehouse-like showrooms, parroting a concept of another
extinct Chicago retailer, Levitz Furniture Corp. But Homemakers, known
for its warbling theme song in television ads, found itself bombarded
by competitors ranging from discount stores such as Wal-Mart, Target
and Costco, to specialty stores Crate & Barrel, Ikea, Rooms to Go,
Walter E. Smithe and Ethan Allen."

Here is another viewpoint:

"President and CEO Steve Fishman is leaving the bankrupt chain to
become the top executive at closeout retailer Big Lots. Rhodes named
its veteran chief financial officer, Joel Dugan, to replace him as CEO
and president. Dugan said Rhodes? first order of business is to
complete the filing of its Chapter 11 reorganization plan. ?Too many
customers were victimized by poor financing through Household
International and HSBC, thus Rhodes was in a bad position? said
consumer advocates at Household - HSBC Watch."

The "Household - HSBC Watch Consumer Advocates" site is a specialized
site; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution may be more focused on general
business issues while the HSBC site tends to have a particular
viewpoint towards HSBC.

Hey folks posting since 6/10,
Google-Answers is not a blog, where if you post a comment, maybe
someone will help you. If you want help, you will have to post your
own question though I don't want to give you much hope on this
subject.

Just a bit of friendly advice.
Regards, Myoarin
