Dear mooch43-ga,
,
Paul Julius Reuter (1816-1899) founded what is now known as Reuters,
in London in 1851. He was engaged in transmitting stock market
quotations by cable between London and Paris. Two years earlier he was
based in Aachen using pigeons to send information to Brussels.

The Reuters web site has a comprehensive history of Reuter and the
company. Once on the site, the links on the left will take you to his
biography and a time-line.
