At an antiques show recently my wife and purchased a hand-made piece
of Cartier sterling silver. It is a type of container perhaps to hold
juice or syrup. It measures 9 1/2" tall x 4 1/2" wide and almost looks
like "Aunt Jemima" in that it has three concentric balls one atop the
other with the top one being only about an inch in diameter and is
removable. The piece has two ivory "arms" as handles. On the base it
is signed: "Cartier, Hand Made, Sterline" and then has the maker's
signature in script that appears to be "Schroth." Can you identify who
"Schroth" is, when he worked for them, and any other information that
might be useful to us. Thanks. Ross E. Heller

Hi,
This is just a free comment, no answer, but on this site you can click
on the numbers for the two Cartier items and read that they were
produced by another company. If you then click on S you can find an
item made by "Schroth 1997", apparently a modern silversmith of that
name, since the date indicates that Schroth is a name that appears
earlier, as you can see by scrolling to find names with different
dates, unfortunately not in this catalog.

This isn't much help, of course, and I could not find anything else
pertinent on the name Schroth, but perhaps a Researcher can.
Good luck

Cartier-Schroth-
I apprenticed with Wolf Schroth 1967 through 1970. Schroth was head
silversmith at Tiffany & Company before purchasing the old
"Hickock-Matthew" company/name from Newark New Jersey. He moved
Hickok-Matthew to Montville, NJ. We specialized in fine handwrought
sterling holloware and produced items for Cartier, Georg Jensen, and
many private and famous individuals. Items ranged from things as small
as thimbles, to complete tea/coffee service as well as flatware. Most
all of the silversmiths from this time period were the last of the
'handwrought' silversmiths, Europeans who previously worked for
Tiffany,Cartier,Jensen,BlackStarr&Frost, etc.

P.S.
Not all Cartier pieces were marked with the "Schroth" signature. The
majority were not. If Schroth designed the piece, then his mark would
go on. Many of the items for Cartier or Jensen were designed by them,
so were only marked with their hallmarks. We also made many Cartier
items for the White House - such as sterling cigar/cigarette boxes,
chargers, picture frames, etc., which were all diplomatic gifts, many
of which carried the presidential seal.
