My Blackberry is not receiving a signal even though I'm in an area
where I should be getting a signal, and where I've always got a signal
before.  Why is it not receiving a signal?

Did you turn the radio on?  If not, for me (7520), I would use the
track wheel on the main screen and highlight the radio tower icon
(which if off would not have any circles about it) and click the mouse
wheel in once.
