Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married in a Catholic church called
Our Lady of the Valley in Canoga Park, California. Where can I find
pictures of that church? The church (sometimes referred to as OLV)
was torn down in the late 60's and a large brick church was put up in
its place on the opposite corner of the property. If you can find any
pictures of that original church, either on the web, or that you find
and can scan and post on the web for a little while, it would be
appreciated. This church was the first one built in the San Fernando
Valley, built in the early 1900's (I think, or possibly in the late
1800's) and the inside had large, exposed wood beams. Pictures of the
church is only worth $5 to me, unless they are really good.

I will increase the price to $15 (or more for a series of really great
pictures) if you can find any of the wedding pictures of Lucille Ball
and Desi Arnaz that show even a slight, but recognizable amount of the
church, church property, brick school, or parish hall in the back
ground. It was their remarriage in June of 1949 that was in this
church, not their first marriage of November 30, 1940.

I do not want this picture:

It's of no value to me because it does not show any of the church or
school in the background.

Any advice where I can find such pictures would be appreciated,
especially any of the wedding pictures of Lucy and Desi at this
church.

I'd like to emphasize that the wedding pictures must have a unique
recognizable part of the church or school in the background, such as a
window, the altar, etc. A plain white wall or a plain brick wall is
not good enough.

If you have good pictures of the original church, let me know and I'll
open another question for you to respond to. (That's only worth $5.00
to me.) But if you have found good pictures of Lucy and Desi's
wedding that show some of the church in the background, this is the
place to respond. A series of pictures will get a nice tip.

Hello stevep234-ga,

This is a tougher question than you would expect. Have you tried
contacting the church to see if they have what you need in their
archives?

hi,
Thank you for your help.
Actually I have been there personally and they have very little
additional information available in their archives. All records were
condensed to only the records needed to be kept in order to conserve
space and money. Then in 1994 the earthquake did a lot of damage and
they lost a lot of what they did have again. For a long time they
were using a big tent.
I can get a few pictures from them of the old church, that's why I
won't pay much for more church photos, but they have no pictures of
Lucy's wedding there. I was hoping with all the publicity of her
remarriage to Desi, there would be some kind of publicity photos
readily available of them at the church.
Thanks for helping.
Steve

Hello again stevep234-ga,

I can feel your frustration. It would seem there would be a photo
available of the wedding of such a high-profile star. Have you tried
contacting The Tidings to see if they have some photos in their
archives? Also, there are dozens of resources that might be worth
pursuing on the "San Fernando Valley ? History and Lore" site. Have
you tried any of these? This is the kind of search that triggers all
my compulsive impulses. Good luck for your quest.

Hi,
Thanks for your help. I'm still looking through all the links you
supplied to see where they may lead. And, even in the case where the
link doesn't work, it still provides a lot of great info and suggests
different search avenues. :)

I haven't contacted the Tidings yet - a great suggestion. And your
other links are a great find and may prove very beneficial too. I was
mostly trying all the "I Love Lucy" type sites looking for pictures of
her wedding, but not finding anything.

I'll post here what I can find.

Thanks.

Steve

Contact Jean Jauck, the President of the Canoga/Owensmouth Historical Society.

She has pictures of the church.

The number is: (818)340-3696

All the best!

My sister was married in the old Our Lady of Valley Church. The
church was a wooden structure, green in color, if I recall correctly.
I will search my Dad's slides to see if there is something that you
could use. My dad was an usher at the church and I remember he had
told me that Mnsgr. John J. Hurley had told him that he had married
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. I was viewing Lucy Jrs. web site and saw
her Christening picture. He is in that picture.
If I am lucky enough to find any pictures, I will gladly give them to
you; no need to pay.
