Question ID: 592533
We are looking for vendors that provide a US - Motor Vehicle, Make and
Model database that is useable on an insurance quoting website. This
same type of database is used on many automotive websites when
searching for auto parts, or information specific to certain Make and
Model of automobiles.

The database product should be able to list Model information specific
to the Make, when the Make is selected. For Example: When ?Dodge? is
chosen from the first drop down field, the next field (Model) would
fill a drop down box with models just associated with Dodge. It would
also be nice if this product would also ?auto fill? Make, Model and
Sub-Model information when a Vehicle Identification Number was filled
in on a form.

The only vendor of this type of product that we have found is Chrome
Data Corp (www.chrome.com) of Portland, Oregon.

We are a small firm that is looking to get a new product idea off the
ground. We would like to find at least a couple of other vendors that
provide this type of service to smaller commercial accounts. Please
provide company contact information including Name, Address, Phone and
Website Address.

I don't see where that vendor www.adpclaims.com has a product like the
one I am describing.

imucorp-ga,

I've fielded some VIN software questions in the past. I must say that
-- as far as I can tell -- there do not appear to be too many vendors
offering the type of off-the-shelf software you're looking for.

The one provider whose name keeps on coming up is this one:

VinPOWER

Have a look at their product and let me know:

(1) How close it comes to what you need, and

(2) How many similar products you would consider adequate for a
complete answer to your question?

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga

Thank you. They may be a possibility.

I have emailed them to see if they would be a possibility.

I would like to see 3 alternatives, but one more that would be
reasonable for a business on a smaller budget would suffice.

imucorp-ga,

Thanks for getting back to me...glad to hear that VinPOWER is at least
a possibility for you.

Some others to consider are:

http://www.stronghold.com/products.html
Stronghold VIN

http://www.vinstickers.com/vsVinStickers.aspx
VinStickers.com

http://www.vintek.com/VIN_decoding.html
VINaudit

http://www.dataonesoftware.com/vinDecoderHome.php
XML VIN Decoder
[as I understand things, this is a real-time service, rather than
stand-alone software, but it still seems worth looking into]

http://www.polk.com/Industries/Insurance/Analyze/VINDecode/
[Several different products listed here]

One of these, at least, should work out for you in terms of
capabilities and budget.

However, if it turns out that the well runs dry on all of them, let me
know, and I'll see if I can find others that are a better fit.

Best of luck,

pafalafa,
I have contacted every one of the vendors you list. It appears so far
that VIN Decoding is a much more sophisticated service than we are
looking for.

We are looking for a subscription service/database that will provide
just the following: Year, Make, Model (Sub-Model if applicable).
Ideally it would be a database that would allow a user to choose a
Make of car from a drop down, that would then populate the next field,
a drop down of the Model choices for that Make, etc.

An added feature that would be nice would be the conversion of an
entered VIN into that VIN's, Year, Make and Model.

imucorp-ga,

A thousand apologies!

You had asked for additional information a while back, but I didn't
see your request for some reason until just now. Give me a day or so
and I'll see what I can come up with.

imucorp-ga,

I have a couple of queries out regarding the type of database you're
looking for, and I'll let you know as soon as I hear of anything that
may be a possibility.

In the mean time, you may want to check out this software at eLube:

http://www.elube.net/

Obviously, it's aimed at lube service shops. But the software is
affordable, and does include a VIN lookup...may be worth contacting
them to see what (if anything) they can offer.

Keep an eye on this question, in case I can come up with other
possibilities...I should hear back from folks in the next few days.
