Hello 2quixote,

I just wanted to clarify that the name of this poet is Hector Sombre.
Are you positive? I cannot find any mention of anyone by that name.
Have you got other examples of his work?

Hello tomo-ga,

I recently read a biography of Toulouse-Lautrec By Gerstle
Mack, published in the USA by Paragon House. On page 301 the name of
Hector Sombre is mentioned in relationship to Toulose Lautrec. In 1893
Lautrec's friend Desire Dihau printed several musical compositions
these were embellished with cover sheets lithographed by Lautrec. In
1893 Dihau set to music a group of songs by Jean Goudezki published
under the general title of Les Vieilles Histories lautrec supplied a
frontispiece and five illustration.Four more covers for songs date
from 1893:Etude de Femme a poem by Hector Sombre: Carnot Malade! by
Eugene Lemercier,Pauvre Pierreuse! sung by Eugenie Buffet: and Le
Petit Trottin with words by Achille Melandri and music By Dihau. I
know that Sombre was not a well known poet perhaps the poem he wrote
is to be found in the sheet music of Dihau 1893? I have no other
samples of Sombre's work.

Hi 2quixote,

Just to clarify, are you just trying to find the text of the poem that
was in the cover? Or are you trying to find an actual copy of the poem
in its illustrated cover to purchase?

I may have found the second...but no hint as to the first.

Note to other researchers:

The cover clearly does say, "Etude de Femme d'Hector Sombre" - the
spelling is correct.

Hello tomo-ga

I would like to find the text of the poem.

If the copy is a reasonable price I would go for that.

Hi 2quixote-ga –

I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I was hoping to be able to
provide the actual text of the song. Unfortunately, I was unable to
find that. Instead I have found a copy of the song (on sheet music)
and cover for sale in a Gallery in Spain.

Artwork Description:

Here is the artwork close up
http://www.anquins.com/lautrec6.htm

The text, alongside the illustration is in Spanish, however I have
asked some of my Spanish-speaking colleagues to translate it, and they
have done so as follows:

Type: Lithograph

Creator: Toulousse-Lautrec (1893)

Title: Etude de femme

Asking Price: Consult with the gallery

Description: Lithography on colored paper marked "Imp Ch. Joly", 1893,
of the series "Les Vieilles Histoires", published by Ed. Kleinmann,
Paris Delteil 24, Adhemar 26 II, Wittrock 11.

This work is published on sheet music for this collection.

Catalogued by Jonathan Greenberg. Well preserved.

As you can see, you will have to contact the gallery for any further
information. Their homepage is here: http://www.anquins.com/

Their web pages do not load reliably, especially on the English side,
so I’ve clipped the contact information for you.

Regarding the commenter’s statement that “Hector Sombre is a
nickname,” I would be interested in hearing what the basis was for
that comment. Unfortunately, questionme-ga is not a Google Researcher
so will likely not come back to this question.

I am sure if you contact the Gallery, even if you don’t want to
purchase the item, they would likely tell you what the text is on the
inside and may even be able to give you more information about Hector
Sombre himself.

I have provided you with all of the information that seems to be
available for this particular piece of artwork and its contents. If
anything I’ve said is not clear, please feel free to ask me for
clarification.

Regards,

The last information posted by Knowldge_seeker-ga, mentions a copy of
the poemand it's illustrated cover may have been found and asked if I
wanted to purchase it. What happened to this? is ther e a copy for
sale? A copy of the cover was csent to me by a friend in England. This
clearly shows the name of the poem "Etude de Femme" and the name of
the poet d' Hector Sombre.
your latest information suggests that Hector Sombre is a nickname if
this is the case who does the nickname relate to? It is clear that
Toulose Lautrec illustrated the cover for the poem and that a person
by the name of Hector Sombre wrote the poem.
