A curious one that - I have memories of the trading figures between the USSR and Cuma in the 1970s - they were odd - Cuba exported $1m and imported $100m Not that long ago Cuba played some trick with using $US as currency - at the time I reckoned it was an attempt to grab locally held paper I've a hunch that links between Cuba and Spain are rather a lot stronger (and older) than one might expect. On balance Cuba is not that much of a nest of vipers, Castro was quite smart when he unleashed the prison population on Miami - and it is rather likely that they are still playing the same trick. For what it is worth, ie: very little, now is the time for the USA to turn on a 'charm offensive' to Cuba - my approach would be massive funding for their medical schools - with bursaries for S. American students. I've also got a suspicion that the US is not that unfriendly towards Cuba, but both parties are playing out a rather well orchestrated charade. |
