I will be traveling to Martha's Vineyard in May and I need to know
where the best places to stay and eat with a young child (9mos-1 year)
are? I'm looking for really kid friendly environments and I am
especially interested in the hotel part of the question but eating out
is obviously important too. Thanks!

Dear beccagrim-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

As you probably already know, for whatever reason, accommodations that
cater specifically to children in Martha?s Vineyard are rare, but
there are some ?kid-friendly? and ?family-friendly? places to choose
from. Your question basically asks for an opinion (otherwise you could
just browse the Yellow Pages, right?) so I will do my best to offer
you mine based on research of the subject. Here are my selections of
what appear to be the best, highest rated, or (in my opinion) best
suited for a family/children friendly lodging experience on Martha?s
Vineyard:

When I started my research on family-friendly venues on Martha?s
Vineyard I immediately began to notice that Winnetu Resort came up
time and time again. I believe that anyone who knows the least thing
about Martha?s Vineyard would probably recommend this hotel for
someone in your situation:

THE WINNETU RESORT

Children 5 and under: Free
Children's Day Program
Children's Evening Program
Children's Day Program
Clambake
Family Photos by The Howards
Heated outdoor pool
Walking path to beach
Life-size, outdoor chess
Children's playground, volleyball, and basketball
Gas grills on property for your use
Antique vehicles available to shuttle kids between Mattakesett and The Winnetu

This hotel got an 81% rating on TripAdvisor.com from consumers in the
?families with small children? category and is a ?top rated? hotel:

In addition this hotel offers the Lure restaurant that features (among
other things of course) a full children?s menu and the new Osprey
addition of the restaurant specifically designed for family dining.

If you?re out for a quiet time, Edgartown Commons impressed me as a
nice, quiet, laid-back lodging suitable for a small family with
children that will allow you to cook in your room and tend to those
?quiet times? that small children (and parents) often need on a
stressful vacation. Incidentally, this another well-noted lodging that
repeatedly came up in my searchers:

EDGARTOWN COMMONS

?There is a swimming pool for guests, a playground for the kids, and
outdoor picnic areas with barbecue grills?.Each unit is completely
designed for comfortable and convenient vacationing with a kitchen,
living/dining room area and full bath.?

?We welcome children and we need to plan, so let us know. We have an
'infant' room for families with a little one. We also have a room with
queen bed, private bath and a single bed in the alcove.?

PEQUOT HOTEL
http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g41750-d115133-r2965650-Pequot_Hotel-Oak_Bluffs_Martha_s_Vineyard_Massachusetts.html
?We loved this Hotel! The InnKeeper is so wanting to please you and
treats you like you belong here all year. Each room is decorated so
cute. You have your pick of lots of different things for breakfast and
you can sit on the porch on a rocking chair and contemplate the world.
The ocean is just at the end of the street. Love it, Love it, Love
it!?

?My family and I have stayed at this quaint inn for 3 summers in a row
and while not fancy, it is definitely one of our favorites. A family
friendly inn, The Pequot has always made us feel more than welcome.?

This family oriented hotel has been around since 1911! That ought to
speak for itself:

COLONIAL INN
38 N. Water St., Edgartown, MA 02539, USA
Phone: 508-627-4711 or 800-627-4701
http://travel2.nytimes.com/top/features/travel/destinations/unitedstates/massachusetts/marthasvineyard/hotel_details.html?vid=1083919788477
?The inn, part of a busy downtown complex of shops, is perfect if you
like having modern conveniences and being at the center of the action.
It was built in 1911 but doesn't have the same antique quality as the
sea captains' houses. Still, rooms are immaculate and attractively
decorated in soft floral peaches or pastel blues and yellows, with
white pine furniture, and wall-to-wall carpeting in most rooms.
Several common upper-floor decks are great for relaxing, and the
fourth-floor deck has a superb view of the harbor. Holiday theme
weekends, celebrating Halloween and Thanksgiving, are family-friendly,
and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more informative and attentive
staff anywhere on the island.?

well-advertised Kid Friendly vacation rental options:

I?ve selected some venues that I was certain were suitable for your
purposes but of course this does not represent a complete list, nor
does it suggest that there are no others. In my research I found that
there are actually many more ?kid-friendly? and ?family-friendly?
restaurants than hotels on Martha?s Vineyard, but these are some of
the ones that impressed me most as meeting your criteria:
