Yes they can. 
After repossession, the creditor will sell the automobile at auction
for close to nothing and file suit against you for the deficiency. 
After they obtain a monetary judgment against you, they will docket
the judgment, which appears as a lien on any real property you own for
twenty years (at least in New Jersey).
