There's these people collectively known as Google who have done quite a good job :) Seriously, theres also the wayback machine, which archives a lot of popular content..http://www.archive.org. I've used it a few times to dig out content from defunct websites. |

I know you said " but I'd also like information written by somebody other than the people doing the designing" but what I think you're after is something like http://www.w3.org/RDF/ or http://www.w3.org/2000/01/sw/ what this is the start of a standard for people to write self describing content in other words you would have tags (much like html) that would describe the context of the information an example is here http://rdf.dmoz.org/rdf/structure.example.txt and this is a page evangelising it and explaining it |
