Some spyware is so deeply embedded that you may need to manually
delete the registry keys. This is a potentially dangerous process to
the casual computer user, as deleting the wrong key can do harm to
your computer. You may want to take your computer to a company that
does computer work for the public, (Geek Squad for example).
Spyware uses registry keys for a number of different things. The
number one thing I see them using them for is to automatically kicking
off the spyware when you computer starts up. Another use is to create
a 'regenerative' property with the spyware. You clean out your
computer using a spyware removal tool and the spyware keeps coming
back. This is very frustrating, but it still can be removed. Find
the keys, delete them, then remove the spyware using an utility.
Voila, it's gone! :)
To prevent and/or remove future spyware, here are the tools you need:
1. A working, up-to-date antivirus product. Some spyware does show
up on AV products and can be cleaned in this way. Grisoft makes a
free AV product (AVG free) that can be used if you cannot buy one.

2. A working, up-to-date firewall product. A firewall prevents
unauthorized internet connections from getting through to your
computer. Some spyware can be blocked using this product. Zone Labs
has a free firewall called ZoneAlarm that you can use if you cant
afford a retail product.

3. A working, up-to-date Spyware/Malware program. No getting around
this unfortunately. You can use Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta
product for free for the time being. When they fully release the
product, it will either be rolled into future Windows products,
available as a standard update for all currently supported Windows
products, or you will have to pay for it out of pocket. You can find
this at: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
4. Careful Web-surfing habits. A vast majority of spyware is
installed by visiting less-than-reputable websites. If you notice
that a site you visit installed spyware on your computer, stop
visiting that site.
Use these tools and you will greatly decrease or eliminate the
potential for getting new spyware on your computer. I hope my 8+
years working in IT helps you in this matter. Good luck in your
future computing! |
