Where can I find sales figures (either dollar figures or unit sales)
for blue jeans both in the United States and worldwide?

Hi

I located the 2001 sales figures in dollars for denim jeans in the
U.S. but the worldwide figures are not available for free. Would you
accept the information I have on U.S. as an answer?

Detailed market data of the type which you seek is usually only
available in proprietary reports which often very expensive. Would you
like us to research the availability of proprietary reports that match
your requirements?

Thanks

Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, U.S. dollar figures and/or unit
sales figures would be fine. I understand that getting some of those
other figures could be difficult. Indeed, I'm kind of glad to hear
that it is. I'm a fairly decent researcher, and I was a bit ashamed I
couldn't turn up any of this on my own! Thanks for your help.

Hello Jmick,

Thank you for your question.

The following are the sales figures I located in dollars for denim
jeans in the U.S. As I mentioned above detailed market data of the
type which you seek is usually only available in for purchase.

At the Cotton Incorporated website there are many articles, reports
and statistics related to the blue jeans industry.

In a recent article “More is More” dated June 13, 2002, they stated
that blue jean sales for 2001 were for $13.4 billion.

“Despite recent reports of a possible glut of denim in the market,
consumers keep stocking up. According to Mintel International Group
Ltd., sales for denim jeans were $13.4 billion in 2001, up 4.8% from
2000 sales, which the firm estimated at $12.8 billion. And a report
from STS Market Research found that denim jeans represented 72% of all
dollar sales of denim bottoms sold at retail in 2001.”

In addition there is a table on the average denim wardrobe of female
consumers aged 16 to 70.

In a press release dated March 1, 2001 Cotton Incorporated Reports
Strong Fourth Quarter For Denim Bottomswear

“Sales of girls’ and men’s denim bottomswear had the greatest impact
with gains of 18.0 and 4.8 percent, respectively. The men’s market
accounted for 43.3 percent of total denim sales. Women’s denim sales,
accounting for 31.8 percent of total denim sales, posted a gain of 2.8
percent for the quarter.

Overall, denim sales for 2000 grew 5.0 percent as a result of strong
sales in the adult and girls’ markets. Increases ranged from 5.7
percent in the women’s market to 9.1 percent in girls’. Men’s denim
posted an increase of 6.0 percent for the year.

Denim jeans, the largest denim category, had an increase in unit sales
of 5.1 percent for the year. Gains ranged from 5.2 percent in men’s to
8.3 percent in girls’. Unit sales of boys’ non-denim bottomswear
increased 10.3 percent for the year.

In 2000, 41.4 percent of all denim jeans sales were made at mass
merchants, the largest distribution channel for denim jeans. This was
slightly higher than the 1999 share of 40.3 percent. By gender, mass
merchants accounted for 36.6 percent of female denim jeans’ sales last
year, and 44.3 percent of male denim jeans’ sales.”

Textile Consumer Archives – Summer 2001 - Sales of Men's Denim Jeans

“The popularity of denim jeans for men remains high in almost every
age group - most male respondents to Cotton Incorporated's Lifestyle
Monitor™ rank denim jeans as their first choice for casual wear and
say they would rather wear denim jeans than casual slacks. According
to consumer data from STS Market Research, of Cambridge, MA, jeans
outsold slacks in the first quarter of 2001, accounting for an
estimated 43.5% of unit sales of men's bottomswear (jeans, slacks, and
shorts), while slacks accounted for about a third (34.3%) of unit
sales.”

In addition, there is a chart of unit sales of men’s denim jeans by
age of wearer versus population age distribution Jan- March 2001.

Textile Industry Media Group published the following piece of market
research on their website dated January 2001.

“Cotton Incorporated, New York City, reports that third-quarter 2000
unit sales of denim bottomswear increased 6.3 percent, a 3.2-percent
gain compared with the same period last year. According to the
consumer data from the NPD group, this was the strongest third-quarter
gain since 1995. Both adult denim markets were strong, with advances
of 9.6 percent in the men’s market and 5.6 percent in the women’s
market for the quarter. Increases in the children’s markets ranged
from 1.5 percent for boys to 6.9 percent for girls. For the first nine
months of the year, unit sales of denim bottomswear grew by 5.1
percent over 1999. By age and gender, year-over-year gains in denim
bottomswear ranged from 6.3 percent in the girl’s market to 6.5
percent each in the men’s and women’s markets. Unit sales of total
bottomswear (denim and nondenim) expanded at a rate of 6.6 percent
over the previous year for the first nine months of 2000. Sales were
strong in the adult market, with gains of 7.0 percent and 7.9 percent
posted by the women’s and men’s markets, respectively. Mass merchants,
the major retail distribution channel for denim jeans, accounted for
41.3 percent of all denim jeans sales for the first nine months of
2000, an increase of 1.2 points compared with the same year-ago
period. National brands accounted for nearly 57 percent of all unit
sales of denim jeans for the period. By gender, national brands
represented a large share; in the men’s market at 65 percent and in
the women’s at 50 percent. The Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor™
confirms that the United States really is a denim nation owning, on
average, a total of seven pairs of jeans each. American men and women
wear jeans, on average, three to four times per week.

Although these figures are from 1995, this may give you a rough idea
for unit sales of jeans.

“This resurgence of designer denim is good news for retailers who have
suffered from a dip in apparel spending. According to figures supplied
by NPD for Cotton Incorporated, 511.9 million pairs of denim jeans
were sold in the U.S. in 1995, up from 483.3 million the year before.”
