I need to find case studies where fossils / microfossils have been used in engineering projects. For example, in the bulding of the channel tunnel, the tunnel bouring machines were kept on course by analysing the microfossils in the rock they were drilling through - this allowed them to ensure they were on course through the correct rock strata. I have some starting points but they all need fleshing out! 1) Apparently an investigation for the River Severn Dam project, found graptolites and these were used to date sandstone belts. 2) Tsunami deposits in Hawaii were identified using Microfossils. 3) The Chalk under the Thames Barrage was identified by the mircofossils in contained. If you could help me flesh out any of the above case studies or provide any new ones, that would be great. Kind regards, Paul |
