Video is in black and white. Camera is behind the couch and does not
move the whole video. Guy puts a record on and sits down on the couch
with his back to the camera. Guy smokes a cigarette for the duration
of the music video and does not get back up. Was featured on either
VH1/MTV as one of the 100 "coolest" videos ever. The artist was
somewhat obscure. What is the name of this video?

You may be remembering "Bastards of Young," by The Replacements.

You can watch the video on MTV's site (you have to watch a brief ad first):

http://www.mtv.com/sitewide/apps/mediaplayer/index.jhtml?vid=9827&channelID=1&orgID=2&gateway=bands&paid=1056&section_0=bands&section_1=az&section_2=replacements&section_3=audvid.jhtml&refURL=/bands/az/replacements/audvid.jhtml

Please let me know if this is the right video.

Have you had the time to view the video? The Replacements' "Bastards
of Young" has appeared on many lists of top videos on MTV and VH1.

Just checking to see whether you'd viewed the video yet. I am
reasonably certain that "Bastards of Young" is the video that you
remember, but I'd like to be certain before posting an official
answer.

I'm glad to have been able to help you identify your video as
"Bastards of Young," by The Replacements. I remembered having seen
this on VH1 long ago, and your description rang a bell (or played a
guitar) in my head.

This has got to be one of the least expensive music videos ever
produced. All they needed was a cheap home stereo, a couch, a guy, and
a cigarette!

Best regards,
pinkfreud

In case you're interested in buying an audio recording of "Bastards of
Young," plus many other songs by The Replacements, I highly recommend
the collection "All for Nothing/Nothing for All":
