I forgot to add my search strategy:

From my preliminary research, I think this may be a difficult question
to answer.  Thare are databases claiming that there are approximately
16,000, 17,000, or even 23,000 golf courses in the United States.  And
more courses are being built all the time.

Nevertheless, I assume that a list that is recent and from a
trustworthy source would be sufficient to answer the question, even if
it misses a relatively small number of courses.

It sounds like mwalcoff found a good way to avert the difficult
research problem; if it's not on the Internet, ask an expert.  Good
job, mwalcoff!
