This week's (August 27, 2002) 'Around the Horn' in the New York Times Sports section has their baseball writers discussing that quote. You'll need Flash software to hear it: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/sports/index.html Jack Curry describes it as one of his favorite quotations. After pitcher Hideki Irabu failed to cover 1st base in the final game of 1999 Spring Training, NY Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called Irabu a "fat, pussy toad." As Curry notes in last night's audio, editors were perplexed by how to put Steinbrenners comments in print. The middle word was often excised, as you can see in this description of the game and events from CNN-SI: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/1999/04/02/boss_irabu/ As a side note, this Google researcher asked the question in the Aug. 27 NY Times 'Around the Horn' program. |
