Question ID: 594396
I would like information on a company called ChocoVision (www.chocovision.com).
ChocoVision is (I think) a privately owned company, founded in 2002,
which manufactures and sells a very nice line of high-tech chocolate
tempering machines (as well as a line of related accessories and
tools).

There contact information is as follows:
Chocovision
(845) 473-4970 / (800) 324-6252 / Fax: 845-473-8004
14 Catharine St (PO Box 5201)
Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
ian@chocovision.com

The information I would like is the following:
(1) Approximate annual ($) sales of their chocolate tempering machines
(2004 or 2005-ytd).
(2) What company actually manufactures ChocoVision?s chocolate tempering machines.
(3) Who holds the patents on their chocolate tempering technology

paladinmed-ga,

You've asked a reasonable question, and priced it fairly, but I'm
nonetheless reluctant to tackle it because of its three-part
nature...I imagine my fellow researchers may feel likewise.

The problem is, suppose we find the answer to (1) and (3), but not
(2)...or some other combination of hits and misses. Our efforts will
then go to waste, since we won't be able to post an answer to your
question that meets all three parts.

You see the problem...!

Let us know your thoughts on the best way to proceed with this.

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga

Hello paladinmed-ga,

I love researching companies like this. I did some preliminary
research on your question and answering it is going to be much tougher
than you would expect. This is an extremely low profile company
regarding ownernship and business issues.

The likelihood of finding yearly sales information is extremely
remote. Finding information about the patent owner and the
manufacturer also looks to be extremely tough. You might want to close
this question and post three separate questions.

Can you tell us anything more about the company or the context of your
question? Have you tried contacting the company to get the information
you need?

I look forward to your clarification.

CZH:
Good point.
To remedy, I have increased the payment to $150, and will split the
payment into 3 equal parts: an answer to each individual question is
worth $50. Upon receipt of one or more answers, I will send payment
and edit the parameters (and question content) down to reflect ongoing
activity. I hope this is OK (as you can tell, I am not yet
"socialized" to Google-Answers methods).
Thanks,

Hello paladinmed-ga,

Thank you for getting back to me. If you?re interested in getting
?socialized to Google Answers methods? I suggest that you review the
following links. It will give you some guidelines on how to get the
most out of this service. We have many experienced researchers who are
ready to answer market research questions. It?s usually best to post
several questions, instead of one multi-part question if you want to
optimize getting at least some elements of a multi-part query
answered. Be sure to give as much information about the context of
your question as possible to help the researcher. Please mention what
you already know so researchers don?t have to duplicate your efforts
and be sure to continue the clarification process until you?re
satisfied with the answer.

Now, to your current question!

This is a very tough search. I?ve spent several hours and I?ve found a
lot of information but I haven?t been able to get answers to your
questions ? although I?ve gotten lots of tantalizing leads. Here is
what I have so far.

I?ve identified the name of the inventor of the chocolate tempering
machine, when he invented it and the fact the product went to market
in 1996. The inventor filed for a patent. I haven?t located the patent
yet.

I?ve found the original name of the product and the company. The
founder got help and a substantial investment from a large company
outside the food industry. This company helped found the predecessor
company to ChocoVision and helped with marketing the tempering
equipment.

ChocoVision?s company profile shows it was ?founded five years ago?
but the location and contact phone number for the company has not
changed despite the fact that the company and the product line have
both been renamed. The same large company still seems to have a major
interest in ChocoVision as it had in the predecessor company. I have
not been able to track down the details but I?ve found a links to
hidden web pages that clearly establish the relationship.

It seems that something happened around 2000 that changed the status
of the company. It seems to have become pretty aggressive about it?s
marketing efforts with participation in various trade shows and the
sponsorship of a winning team at the bi-annual pastry competitions.
They seem to do a lot of marketing through an eBay store as well.

As I said before, it?s unlikely that anyone will be able to get sales
figures for recent years. It might be possible to locate an expensive
market research report that would make a reference to ChocoVision
(Mintel might be worth checking) but my preliminary search found very
little information about this market. Even with extensive digging, the
information may simply not be available.

Every indication I?ve found shows that the tempering machine is
manufactured in the US by the company that was started by the inventor
and its successor company. I would have to do additional research to
confirm this as well as further searching to locate the patents
received by the inventor.

I have found quite a lot of information about this company but some of
it is confusing and obscure.

Please let me know if what I?ve found will meet your needs even with
the caveats about the gaps that can?t be filled.

I look forward to your clarification.

CZH:

Tell you what: give me what you've got and we'll call it sufficient
for the full $150 payment.
(1) the name of the inventor of the chocolate tempering machine (I can
get the patent)
(2) the original name of the product and the company---and the name of
the large company outside the food industry which provided initial
funding
(3) the name of the predecessor company to ChocoVision
(4) any other stray (but potentially interesting) info you may have
stumbled across.
Thanks again!

Hello again paladinmed-ga,

This search has turned into a true detective story. I?ve found a lot
of the information you?re looking for but I?ve also found some leads
that I haven?t been able to follow to the end and I?m still not
completely clear on what is going on with ChocoVision. I have
organized the various threads of the research to help make sense of
the various parts. I will highlight what I think are the missing
pieces so you can decide whether to pursue them further or not.

After various combinations of search terms I was able to identify Skip
Snyder as the inventor of the table-top chocolate tempering machine
which he originally called ?The Sinsation Chocolate Maker.? He applied
for a patent for it and got an infusion of $1 million from Indotronix
International Corporation (IIC) which helped him set up Chandre LLC to
market the machine ? mostly through mail order. This product went to
market in 1996.

It is not clear what happened, but in approximately 2000 the company
changed its name to ChocoVision and rebranded the tempering equipment
under the ChocoVision name. Ownership of the company seems to have
stayed with Indotronix (IIC) during the entire time. With help from my
colleague pafalafa-ga I?ve been able to locate some sales figures for
ChocoVision. The marketing focus seems to have shifted to eBay and
active participation in online forums and industry trade shows and
events. The product literature for the chocolate tempering equipment
shows that it is manufactured in the US.

Below, I?ve grouped the information into topic-oriented sections and
include my interpretation of what is going on, if necessary. Please
don?t hesitate to ask for clarification on any of this convoluted
story.

I wish you well for your project.

SINSATION CHOCOLATE MAKER, SKIP SNYDER, CHOCOVISION

Do you know... About ChocoVision Corporation?

The idea was simple: Take the world's most perplexing food (chocolate)
and make it simple, fun and economical for anyone to use. The
ChocoVision Corporation took this idea and made it a reality. After
many months of experimentation, processes to effectively manage the
more difficult aspects of temperature control were developed and
improved upon. Proprietary software-based technology combined with
efficient design resulted in the development of the original
"Sinsation Chocolate Maker".

Introduced in 1996, the "Sinsation" became an instant hit among
homemakers and hobbyists. At last, the fine art of "tempering"
chocolate became accessible to all. Soon, professional pastry chefs
and well-known chocolatiers began ordering the Sinsation machine,
followed by many restaurants, coffee shops, caterers, hotels and
resorts. Within a few years ChocoVision had introduced the "New
Sinsation". This product retains the compact and efficient tabletop
design of its predecessor while greatly increasing the performance of
the machine. With its enhanced performance the "New Sinsation" became
a viable alternative to "hand-tempering" or double boilers. Even small
to midsize confection manufacturers were now accepting this useful
tool. The hobbyist as well as the professional benefited alike from
the speed, efficiency, accuracy and reliability of the "New
Sinsation". The folks at ChocoVision are committed to providing the
industry with the most innovative chocolate processing equipment ever
developed.

http://www.s-t.com/daily/06-97/06-22-97/f03bu196.htm
Now chocolate lovers can make treats at home

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Chocolate lovers who try to recreate those
store-bought goodies in their own kitchens often find out what a
hair-pulling experience cooking with chocolate can be.

Moments of inspiration soon turn into prolonged periods of frustration
when attempts to melt bulk chocolate go up in smoke, or the finished
product doesn't taste as sweet as one envisioned.

But help has finally arrived. Billed as the first invention of its
kind, a Poughkeepsie, N.Y., company has introduced "The Sinsation
Chocolate Maker," a kitchen appliance that promises to help you make
the kind of chocolate delicacies that Martha Stewart would envy.

"Anybody who cooks anything wants to get that wide-eyed look that
says, 'You made that?"' said Skip Snyder, who invented the gadget. "We
have taken the mystery of the black art completely out of the
equation."

Of course, this kind of chocolate perfection does come at a high price
-- the Sinsation, available by mail-order, sells for a hefty $329.

Snyder, an inventor for years, started work on the Sinsation more than
a decade ago when he "was looking for something to do.

After Snyder patented his device, he enlisted the help of Indotronixs,
a Poughkeepsie-based systems and software company, to refine his
design. Indotronixs not only invested about $1 million in the project,
but also worked to create Chandre LLC., which markets the Sinsation to
chocolate lovers and businesses worldwide. Snyder is the company's
chairman and founder.

Don Rao, managing director of Chandre LLC., compares the Sinsation to
the evolution of the personal computer.

"What Skip has done is bring the (chocolate) technology to the common
household level," he said.

Rao estimates that 80 percent of the Sinsation's customers are baking
enthusiasts, while the rest are businesses. Most of Chandre's
advertising is aimed at readers of culinary or chocolate magazines.

So far, company officials say several hundred Sinsations have been
purchased, but Rao and Snyder refuse to give an exact number.
Available mostly by mail order, customers also receive a free supply
of chocolate, and can purchase bulk chocolate directly from the
company.

While both men say the business has been a success, don't expect to
buy the Sinsation at Macy's or Wal-Mart in the near future. Chandre
prefers to market and sell the device itself, as it provides
continuous support and advice to Sinsation customers, Snyder said.

It seems one of the writers is a bit on the paranoid side. To my way
of thinking, a scam requires a victim who has been decieved by false
promise. I find nothing in this site that is hidden, nobody is asking
for any personal infrmation that would put them at risk. You can spend
some money or not, your choice. Bandwidth costs money! If this site is
to succeed, it will need to pay it's bills somehow. To call it a scam
just because of that is unfair and unwarranted.

SKIP SNYDER
If anyone is interested in chocolate, particularly the tech and health
sides, it might become an interesting discussion.

The Philadelphia National Candy, Gift & Gourmet Show an Unprecedented Success

Poughkeepsie, NY September 2004? As many of you know, ChocoVision once
again took part in the Philadelphia National Candy, Gift & Gourmet
Show at The Valley Forge Convention Center, in Valley Forge, PA, from
September 12th through the 14th. It would be an understatement to say
that the response we received was overwhelming. The ChocoVision
Corporation strives to be industry leaders in quality and customer
service, and truly felt rewarded for our efforts through the feedback
and the buzz circulating throughout the convention.

Jeff Carano

More about Jeff
Jeff has been a fixture on the Hudson Valley music scene for over
twenty years and is known for being adept at playing in a number of
musical idioms. Jeff?s versatility comes from his diverse musical
background, education, and years of professional experience.

Jeff combined his musical activities with a career in the corporate
world, where he was General Manager of the elite Steinberger Guitar
Company through 1990. Jeff continues to use his trademark Steinberger
basses today, and maintains a friendship with company founder and lead
designer Ned Steinberger.

Jeff Carano and Jeff Babicz launched the Babicz Guitars USA company in
late 2003. The two "Jeff's" had worked together for many years at the
Steinberger Guitar Company in the 1980's, and have been involved with
other successful enterprises since then. Babicz Guitars USA has
already made a significant impact on the American guitar industry. The
company has a number of patents pending, a major US distribution deal
with Hohner/HSS and currently has further innovations in development.

***** Nothing on Jeff Carano?s website confirms the association with
ChocoVision but it seems to be the same person.
