In the song "Gimme a Pigfoot" (by Wesley Wilson), sung by Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone, one of the lines is "send me a gate". (gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer, send me a gate, I don't care). What does this mean?? I can't find any other examples of its use. My only theory is that it's referring to prison, but I can't find any confirmation of that. Please help! Or I'll have to go back to singing along - "send me agape". I kind of like that better anyway |

Okay, when I read your question, the gate thing immediately brought to my mind "Give me a safe passage". I knew I saw it on TV or something. Then I remembered that I read it in a book. I looked in Google's book search(Google is the best!)and this is an answer: Good Morning, Killer by April Smith - Fiction - 2004 - 380 pages Page 30 - ?I'm just looking for safe passage, hon?' ?Meaning? ... ?Give me safe passage.' And you'd say, ?Okay.' And he'd say, ?I know you're smoking cigarettes and ... Anyway, to make a long story short, in this story I read, it means 'hear me out'. gate/ passage.... could it mean the same thing? I hope this helps! Faither |

Could it really be "Send me a gait (or agait)?" Meaning: Send me walking, a euphemism for "Hit the road, jack." Just a thought! |
