I recently read that the US government has distributed tens of thousands of brochures to law enforcement agencies that point out that foreigners who are apprehended have the right to contact their embassy or consulate. This is a right based on international law, and one that has not been highly respected by all agencies. Sorry, no link - from me. World Trade Organization multinational agreements on tarifs and subsidies do influence US policy, as do disputes with the European Union. Sometimes US policy is influenced by decisions of the United Nations, for example in the Kuwait-Iraq crisis, when the US did not press ahead and try to oust Saddam Hussein. |
