Alexander's wife was Mary G. Shepherd, as
noted on this page:
http://www2.h-net.msu.edu/~dclist/shepherd.html
just under the heading "Manuscript Materials",
midway down the page.
His full name was Alexander Robey Shepherd
1835-1902. This page shows his picture:
http://www.calnative.com/n_silver.htm
and provides some details of his life as
the last territorial Governor of Washington,
D.C. and as a silver mining entrepeneur.
This page has an interview which quotes him
in regards to his children:
"...As for me, I have a wife and six babies
in the house here. I don't purpose that my
children shall ever have to acknowledge
their father a thief." ...from:
http://prorev.com/dcfacts3.htm
Here is an article, originally from The
Washington Post, entitled "Pride of Place
for a Hometown Hero" which summarizes his
life: http://members.aol.com/PadroANC2C/fromthe.htm
And this page "Evaluation of 26 Tourist
Guidebooks" by Mark David Richards and
Cherith Anne Richards, January 2000,
contains many blurbs about his life from
the reviewed guidebooks:
http://64.77.121.113/richards/000126.htm
Sadly, I was unable to locate any references
to his children, other than his quote about
having six of them. Nor could I locate any
further information on his wife, Mary G.
I don't believe the information exists,
at least online.

Thank you for the information which you gave me it was very helpful.
Maybe it would be better if I told you that I still would like to find
out more information about his immediate family which I don't have any
information about. If you aren't able to find it for me, maybe someone
else can read this message and find it for me.
What you still might be able to help me on is find is a closes up
picture of his statue which was located at one time outside of the DC
headquarters in Washington DC. Do you think that this is possible.
Please do let me know. I have a distance picture but would like to
find a picture very close up if possible.
Thank you.

I am reasonably sure I can locate a picture of his
statue when I return this evening, though I can't
be sure of how closeup the photo will be. I ran
across several references to it in my searches.
As I recall, it was located outside a building
which has now become a police impound facility,
and there was a movement afoot to have it
relocated to a location with more distinction.
His family is another matter, since I did not see
ANY references to them, other than the ones I
provided. Nonetheless, I can try some other
strategies in searching for them.
Please realize that, once the question is
answered, it is no longer available to the
view of researchers as an unanswered question
would be, so the chance of others adding a
comment is limited to those who bookmarked
the question out of personal interest.
Until this evening...

Here is a link to the Boss's statue, though
it is not the closeup you desire:
http://www.dcwatch.com/photos/district.jpg
The citatation under the smaller picture,
on the following page, notes that the statue
is in front of The District Building:
http://www.dcwatch.com/photos/default.htm
It was apparently moved since then:
"...the city, under Mayor Pothole in 1979,
had his wonderful statue removed from its
place of honor on Pennsylvania Avenue near
the District Building, and unceremoniously
"dumped" at the Blue Plains sewage facility."
Quoted from this page:
http://www.dcwatch.com/themail/1999/99-08-08.htm
The following page notes the location of
the Boss's statue as of September, 2001:
"...a statue of Alexander Shepherd, once
the head of public works, now stands in
front of the D.C. Department of Public
Works facility in Blue Plains. The
eight-foot-tall bronze by local sculptor
Ulrich Stonewall Jackson Dunbar faces
the Shepherd Parkway. According to an
article in The Washington Post, however,
hardly anyone ever sees the statue of
"Boss" Shepherd except Public Works
employees. Some people would like to
move the statue to another location
in the city where more D.C. residents
can see the statue of the person who
so profoundly changed the looks and
image of Washington, D.C." ...from:
http://www.watershedradio.org/september2001/090401shady.htm
Here's a picture of his gravesite, in Rock
Creek Cemetary in Washington, D.C.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=2198
and a full-sized picture here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pis&GRid=2198&PIgrid=2198&PIcrid=104448&PIpi=77314&
As for his family:
This page, from a search of Alexander's full
name on Genealogy.com, shows all the hits:
http://www.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/wizard_results.cgi?Category=Summary&UsearchID=9901c236b0cb1b953d6e64b1k_aiwr&FN=&MN=&LN=&BDATE=&BLOCATION=&DDATE=&DLOCATION=&SL=&SURNAMEONLY=&TYPE=Family&FILE=/ifashare/wizard/215134/77ff2e/9921513477ff2ec2eabd3c5a2FaWOv-Tree.tmp&IND=&GROUPIND=1&GROUPINDNAME=&TREESEARCH=2&FILTER=&HQO_MATCHES=-1&INSP_MATCHES=-1
Or, here's a shorter URL, courtesy of tinyurl.com:
http://tinyurl.com/17um
From that page, I followed links to the
message boards. There's a message with a
short biography, posted here:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/shepherd/messages/938.html
...and another here:
"Looking for descendants of Alexander Robey
Shepherd who moved to Mexico in the mid to
late 1800s." ...from:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/dc/messages/787.html
...and the only reply:
"My gggrandfather is Edwin Wilson who married
Cynthia Hannon her mother was named Julia
Longden and she is a cousin of Alexander. I
found some info on him but have to see how
he is related to my gggrandmother. I'll
send you some info. if you want it. Della"
...from:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/dc/messages/929.html
Those are all the messages about Alexander,
out of 8 million posted.
Here is a book which includes information
about Alexander Shepherd. It may or may
not have information about his family,
or pictures of him and his statue:

Unfortunately, it is out-of-stock at
Barnes & Noble, but seems to be available
at the Pentagon Bookstore, here:
http://www.booksdc.com/gifts.htm
...and for $10 less at AllBookstores.com:
http://www.allbookstores.com/book/compare/1880216086
with used copies available on the same page,
from Half.com, for only $7.49.

Back again.
Ok, I'm continuing to check the links from this page,
on the Genealogy.com site:
http://tinyurl.com/17um
The "World Family Tree" link goes to this page:
http://tinyurl.com/17v9
Which has a 2-star link to a reference with
Alexander's full name. However, all the links
on this page can only be accessed by paying
at least a monthly access fee of $9, per this page:
http://www.genealogy.com/wftonline/v12/3301to3350/v12t3346n.html?name=Alexander%20Robey%20Shepherd
This is also true for the 23 hits under "Historical
Records", the 5 matches under "Family Books & 1850
Census", the 27 matches under "US Census", etc.
None of the 71 matches under "Family Home Pages"
had his birth year of 1835, which is well known.
All the 49 matches under "Family Archives" require
payment as well.
And, finally, none of the other references from
the Google search for Mary G. Shepherd revealed
futher information about her or her children,
though it did unearth a cached link to the
Historical Society of Washington D.C.'s
land records, which confirm her as Alexander's
wife:
"Title: Shepherd, Alexander Robey, 1835-1902.
Deed, 1868 Nov. 6. 1 item. (MS 231)
Notes: Territorial governor of the District of
Columbia. Deed from Shepherd and his wife,
Mary G. Shepherd, to William Wall for property
in Washington.
Subjects: Deeds Washington (D.C.)" ...from:
http://216.239.35.100/search?q=cache:g-FCVRocGqEC:hswdc.org/Do_Research/Research_Collections/Land_Records.asp+%22Mary+G+Shepherd%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
Searches done, via Google:
"Mary G Shepherd"
That's the best I can do with the resources
available online. You might obtain better
results by visiting Washington D.C. and
exploring hard-copy documents and photos
at resources like the Historical Society.
