Q: Fur Is Dead -- So Why is J. Crew Selling It? ( Answered 5 out of 5 stars,   2 Comments )

Why, why, WHY would they do that? I'm totally shocked. J. Crew is
normally a retailer I love, and I am profoundly disappointed in them.
They're selling horrific-looking "trapper" hats made of fox and coyote
skins. They've got shoes and hats trimmed with mink "pom poms" (as if
calling them "pom poms" out-cutes the disgusting nature of what it really
is). I'm not a PETA fanatic, but I think the wearing of fur is
morally reprehensible. Never mind it being a fashion-faux pas. It's
a compassion faux-pas.

As an answer to my question, please give me a list of retailers who
choose NOT to sell fur for ethical reasons. A list of ten or so major
clothing chains would be great.

Hi, here you go...

On the 19th May, Selfridges confirmed that they have now stopped
selling all real fur.
https://www1.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/manchester/2005/05/311522.html

After nearly eight months of campaigning, PETA received written
assurance that Wet Seal will not carry fur during the fall 2005
season.

Topshop, the U.K.'s most highly respected fashion chain-adored by the
fashion media and public alike-debuted PETA's "All Our Fur Is Fake"
decal, which appeared in the windows of all 280 Topshop stores
nationwide.

PETA led a successful campaign to persuade Gap Inc. to stop the sale
of Indian leather.

I quite agree with what you say. I was appalled by the Peta website.
Quote: ?Cattle, sheep, goats and other animals are crammed onto
vehicles in such illegally-high numbers in India that they slip or
fall onto each other?s horns, their bones break and many die en
route.?

When you buy any leather items, find out where they have been
manufactured. This website I have found only uses British leather
which is strictly and humanely controlled: www.annabelchaffer.co.uk

European retail giant Marks & Spencer has announced that it will not
purchase Indian leather until improvements for animals is made. In
addition, Nordstrom, L.L. Bean, Timberland, Eddie Bauer, Travel 2000
and Wolverine Worldwide have joined the growing list of retailers,
including Gap Inc., J. Crew, Clarks, Florsheim, Caterpillar and
Harley-Davidson footwear, which have refused to purchase Indian
leather after being contacted by PETA.

has some very affordable genuine leather handbags that can substitute
fur. Free shipping too.
