I'd like to have some images of viruses I can reproduce in my
newsletter. I'm looking primarily for "drawings" which depict the
regularity of structure (icosahedron, for example). Photos would be
OK but graphical representations would be better.

Hi jat,

Well, that was quite a fun search. I had no idea viruses could be so
beautiful! Below are links to sites that offer photographs, drawings,
and computer-enhanced electron micrographic images of viruses. Some of
the sites offer their artwork for free; others will charge you a
licensing fee. Most offer discounts for use in educational if that's
is what your newsletter is for.

I've also included some references to sites where some very nice
pictures appear but are not offered for sale or use. My thought is
that you could just email the site owner and ask for permission to use
their picture. (In my experience as a graphic designer, most people
are fine with that, in fact flattered.)

MICORBIAL MUGSHOTS
An image gallery of microorganisms.

These images were produced by staff scientists using electron
microscopy and confocal microscopy for microbe visualization. These
images are in the public domain and are thus free of any copyright
restrictions. For public domain images, permission is not required for
their use but we do ask that you credit the EPA and the contributors
(found in the Photo Credit line) whenever an image is used in any
publicly distributed media.

Here are some beautiful detailed 3-d artistic renditions of various
viruses that are available for use in newsletters and other
publication once you have paid a licensing fee.

speaking, the more you want to use the image the more it costs. "

FOTO SEARCH ------
http://www.fotosearch.com/

A search for "virus" on this site nets a return of 49 items that
includes 3 Virus Images from Photodisk at $39.95 each and 5 from
Corbis at $49.95 each.

DENNIS KUNKEL -------

Stunningly crisp computer-enhanced electron micrographic images.
Search for Virus nets 30 returns, approximately 10 of which are the
type of image you describe.

media, size, and exposure."

MGL PICTURE GALLERY -----------

A beautiful picture, copyrighted, but maybe he'd let you use it. If
that's indeed at virus (I'm sorry, I can't tell), I'd say it's worth
asking. The site links to an image gallery that is apparently under
construction still, so they must have more.

BIG PICTURE BOOK OF VIRUSES ON THE WEB -------------

http://www.virology.net/Big_Virology/BVHomePage.html

This site offers a comprehensive directory of many virus images on the
web. Although you may not use the images right from here, each image
is linked to home page of the institution or individual who produced
it. The owner of this website indicates that you must contact the
individuals who own the copyright for permission.

If you use the directory at the left of the homepage, you can choose
how you want the images sorted. The images will appear as thumbnails
with links to the original source.

So, that should be plenty of sources to get you started. Please be
sure to honour all copyrights where they apply. If anything I've said
is not clear, please feel free to ask for a clarification.
