My company currently uses two reporting tools for a data warehousing project - Microsoft Reporting Services (RS) and Cognos ReportNet (CRN). The new version of RS (2005) possesses an adhoc functionality that previously separated the two tools. We have a 99% complete ReportNet metadata layer and do not want to lose the work (nearly one year) that was put into it. However, the cost of CRN greatly outweigh RS's (nearly free - packaged with SQL Server). I understand that it's technically possible to import the CRN metadata into the RS Unified Dimensional Model (UDM) since both use an XML interface. Are there any articles/white papers, etc. that might speak to the feasibility of doing so? What are the common difficulties that one might face? Our team is too small to continue with two similar reporting platforms and a choice is likely to come by year's end. If we can largely save our CRN metadata, I'd like some evidence to back it up and propose a solution to my manager. Thanks for your help! |
