Table 1.9 gives the total number of physicians by specialty and
activity (182 Specialties).

There are 11,329 gastroenterologists in the U.S.

10,362 gastroenterologists are dedicated to patient care.

9,044 are office based.

1,588 are hospital based.

697 have another professional activity, such as research, teaching or other.
