Question ID: 596002
I would like to use my IBM Thinkpad T41p (2373GGU) attached via a Port
Replicator II with 2 external LCD monitors (Dell 2001FP) in Dual
Monitor support, whereas the desktop spans both external monitors
(laptop cover closed). I would like to use these monitors with the
DVI connection.

One final twist...my current configuration with only 1 Dell Monitor is
that I am using a KVM switch to connect the keyboard, monitor and
mouse on this laptop and my Dell server. The Thinkpad is using the
DVI connection and the other computer uses the VGA connection. To use
the KVM, I need to switch the input on the monitor to switch between
the computers.

Does my current configuration all for this? If not, what is needed?
Finally, I am planning to replace my Thinkpad with a newer/larger
model...likely a Thinkpad T42p or T43p...should I look for anything
special to continue to do this function?

tis-gia,

Does your Dell Server support DVI output? if not you will have to
stick with a VGA Dual monitor KVM Switch. You can then use a DVI-VGA
convertor to connect all computers.

You've got two options here...
1. Get a VGA Dual Monitor KVM 4 port switch or (Iogear has a good one)
2. DVI Dual Monitor KVM 4 port switch (Gefen manufacturers one - a little pricey)

There are also restrictions with the Thinkpad Replicator in terms of
max resolution using DVI output. Check the specifications on the max
output resolution using the port replicator @ IBM site or call their
customer support.

I'd go with the 4 port KVM switch instead of 2 port, also with support
for audio support.

Hope that helps...

Pramod,
Thanks for your input and suggestions. I do not believe my Dell
Server has a DVI output, so I currently have to switch my existing
monitor from DVI to VGA when I switch from laptop to server.
Currently, I have a 2 port KVM.

Also, I am aware of the resolutions limitation of the port replicator.
It bums me out, but is good enough.

What do I need in my ThinkPad to support the 2 external monitors,
since it only has 1 DVI connection (I only want Dual Monitor support
on my ThinkPad, not necessary on the server...barely go there))?

Any additional help or explanation on how to get Dual Monitor support
on my ThinkPad, using the port replicator.... Thanks so much,

If you need dual monitor support on your laptop you will need to get
something like http://www.matrox.com/graphics/products/dh2go/home.cfm
. It takes in one VGA input and gives you two video outputs. I am not
sure if this will work with a KVM switch. But you might want to call
their customer service and check that, you can then combine this with
dual vga kvm switch.

Make sure you laptop supports dual monitors in the extended mode
(Display Properties - Settings - Display Dropdown).

I have a T42P attached to a Replicator II and I am currently running
dual 19" LCDs in extended mode. How I acheived this is buying a
TARGUS USB 2.0 Docking Station. I attached this TARGUS to the USB
port on the laptop and not the USB port on the replicator. It was
giving me a slow response attached to the USB port on the replicator.
The primary LCS is attached to the IBM Port Replicator II and the 2nd
is attached to the TARGUS. Once the drivers for the TARGUS is loaded,
select the monitor attached to it (2) and check the "Extend my desktop
to this monitor" box.

One problem, it only support 1280x1024x16 or 1024x768x32.

cheers...
