Hello. The book was "Maus II" (1991) by Art Spiegelman. "The New York Times Book Review listed MAUS II in its hardcover fiction bestseller list. Spiegelman wrote to the Times, pointing out that it was by no means fiction: "It's not as though my passages on how to build a bunker and repair concentration camp boots got the book onto your 'Advice, How-to and Miscellaneous' list. It's just that I shudder to think how David Duke - if he could read - would respond to seeing a carefully researched work based closely on my father's memories of life in Hitler's Europe and in the death camps, classified as fiction." In an unprecedented move, the Review published Spiegelman's letter and then shifted the book to its non-fiction list." http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/03/26/1079939832769.html?from=storyrhs "Maus II, was on the NY Times lists for both hardcover fiction and non-fiction (it was originally mis-classified as fiction), back in 1991-2." http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=36&t=001429 ------- search strategy: "originally * classified as fiction" "maus ii" fiction "new york times" |
