Is there an index that one can use to look up all books with a
particular character name? For instance I'd like to find allbooks with
a "Sarah" as a character, but "Sarah" is not necessarily used in the
title?

I am trying to get books for a reader/book friend who now has a new
baby named Sarah and I am the Godmother.

See if your local public library has access to a database called NoveList.

It contains summaries of thousands of books, including the key
characters.  A search for books containing "Sarah" returned over 1,500
results; over 500 of these were children's books.


Some of the more popular children's books with a Sarah in the story were:


MacLachlan, Patricia
Skylark 


Ross, Lillian Hammer
Sarah, also known as Hannah


Hines, Anna Grossnickle
Don't worry, I'll find you


Chodos-Irvine, Margaret
Ella Sarah gets dressed

I don't know whether such a comprehensive index exists. When I have
researched questions that ask about literary characters with a certain
name, I've gotten good results by using Amazon's A9 search engine. I
check "Books" and uncheck all the other choices. You might give it a
try:

http://a9.com/Sarah

Or you can use a search string like this one:

://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=isbn+%22named+sarah%22

I do hope another Researcher will be able to find what you need. Such
an index would be remarkably useful to those of us who toil on Google
Answers!
