When doing a selection of the "biggest", "best" or "top" of anything,
there's always the problem of the criteria to determine the selection.
In information research, one practical solution is to use the criteria
that you can find, and that reasonably matches the purpose for the
query.
If we constrained to more classical criteria, such as revenue,
fundraising results, number and quality of clients, we could barely
get outside US and UK to some countries in Europe. US, followed at a
distance by UK are by large the countries in the world where the
fundraising practice is more widely developed, being an original
British development strongly rooted in America. European tradition -
in the latest decades also including GB - is more reliant on
governmental funding.
Fundraising, thus, is a practice closely related to the free-market
economy - the more independent from state intervention an economy is,
the more need for charities and nonprofits to fundraise. In Japan,
state intervention is combined with industry corporations culture of
directly addressing their communities social needs, in a scheme of
total-nutritious organization.
Also, fundraising is closely related to wealth, thus the wealthier a
society is, the more possibilities for nonprofits and charities to
fundraise. So, while in developing countries - with so many social
needs to address - fundraising has certainly become a growing activity
in the last few decades, if we compared their fund mobilizing to that
of US, UK or any developed country, probably none of those countries
fundraising companies could be considered as big.
However, since this question explicitly gives us a worldwide context
for the search, a pertinent criterion to select a company as big is
its ability to operate internationally, since it certainly has a big
market, and consequently a big operating capacity.
Therefore, this was the first criterion used for the selection, which
allows to widen up the scope of companies considered, so that although
US and UK would remain the leading countries, smaller companies in
terms of amounts managed but strong in terms of international
operating capacities could be included.
Nevertheless, I reserved the last records of the list for outstanding
American companies that work exclusively - or almost - in the domestic
philanthropic market, but which are huge, traditional fundraising
companies, much bigger than many of the international ones included in
the list, and that undoubtedly make part of the "biggest" of the
world. Please note that the order is not intended as a ranking - which
is not feasible with the available information. In order to present
the information as neatly as possible, same brand associated companies
in different countries have been listed separately or together
depending on how they presented themselves in their website.
Finally, there might be omissions in this list, but still you'll have
a comprehensive sample of the requested spectrum. I remain at your
