well john quincy adams lost to andrew jackson in the 1824 election, but since neither of them had a majority they went to the House where adams was elected over jackson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Quincy_Adams#Election_to_Presidency |

One note--the original electoral college participants cast two votes, and they were not broken up by President and Vice President. In 1800, this caused Jefferson to be in limbo as he did not have the required majority over his running mate, Aaron Burr. It took 36 ballots for him to be elected; this was changed in 1804 with the 12th amendment, which made electors specify who they wanted to be President and Vice President. |
