The scenario: You work for a large consulting firm that designs and
installs and upgrades
networks Your bosses have called you into their office. You are asked
to sit down and take some
notes on a new project. You have until______8/29/02____ to help out
the company on what could
lead to a very big contract. The proposed client wants to test your
company's knowledge and
ability to set up a new office space they just acquired. Here is what
you know:
1. The client just purchased 3 complete floors #27, #28, and #29 of a
35-floor Building.
200 Park Ave, Somewhere, USA. (Each floor will be identical)
2. They already have the first ten floors of the same building.
3. Each floor is _400__ft by __375_ft. a bank of 4 elevators and 2
stairwells are located in
the center of the building, a communication closet is located at the
rear of one of the
stairwells connecting each floor to the next using plenum conduit.
4. The height from floor to ceiling is 10 foot, the floor is 12inch
poured reinforced
concrete. The plenum area from floor above to drop ceiling is
12inches. The building
is steel frame with columns spaced every 16 feet. Lighting will be 2
ft by 4 ft high
efficiency output fluorescents, spaced about 4ft on the narrow side
and 8 ft on the
long side. The booster motors for the HVAC system run the length of
the building
about every 50 feet from the elevator shafts. The HVAC, and electrical
closet is
opposite the communications closet about 30 feet away.
5. This will be the third expansion in 15 years and they are the
regional branch office of
a medium size insurance company.
6. The first 5 floors are still using Type 1, 16Mb IBM token-ring
technology the other
remaining 5 floors have a mixture of mostly 10Mb floors 6, 7, 8, 9 and
some 2 year
old 100Mb Ethernet on floor 10
7. The MDC is located on the 7th floor
8. Each new floor will have __250___ cubicles for sales and clerical
workers. There will
be ___25__ supervisory offices and 1 conference room with video
conferencing.
Also there will be a reception and secretary pool of__24__. Each one
having their
own computer.
9. The sales and clerical workers need use of both impact printers for
forms and laser
printers for letters and documents. The supervisory staff will have
access to the
above as well as 5 color laser printers. But the company does not want
to buy a
printer for each person.
Design one complete floor, include the distribution equipment closet
and list what
you would purchase. How much, and why. This can be a detail list,
short paragraphs
answering the topics below or as a report. It should be at least 2
pages.
You are to recommend
Types of medium: IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3ae, IEEE 802.1 Ib ect.
What did you consider as far as performance and reliability in your
design?
Why?
Your job is to determine the needs for one floor:
Type of cables,
Where would you run it?
What must you avoid?
Why?
How many data jacks, and connectivity devices etc?
Access speeds and conversions
Remember that there are media converters for different technologies
available.
How do you connect to the lower floors?
Did you plan for the future.?
How would you go about bringing the lower floors up to speed in the
near future.
What floors would you upgrade first?
How and why?
How would you handle the printer issues.
Draw a detail floor plan for one floor showing cable runs subnets etc.
Give a detail price list of each item in your design (You are to
consider everything on you
shopping list from each node (NIC cards out)
Also draw one floor distribution rack |
