I would like to know of websites that aggregate category specific
content (ie. like news) where the user's feedback leads to the ranking
of content on the site.. The sites that I have found that are closest
to what i am looking for are reddit.com and digg.com. While I am
interested in sites for all categories, I am particularly interested
in financial news if possible or financial ideas (see
www.valueinvestorsclub.com for the best example of investment or idea
related user generated content that i can find) A great answer to
this question would include many URL's to different general interest
news sites like reddit.com and second, a list of financial related
sites. Thanks.

apple18-ga,

I'm not sure what sort of content ranking you have in mind.

For instance, Yahoo News allows ranking of its stories and photos:

http://news.yahoo.com/

Near the top of the page are a set of tabs, one of which says: Most Popular.

Clicking on that will then allow you to select one of three ranking schemes:

--Most Emailed

--Most Viewed

--Most Recommended

For the "Most Recommended News", for instance, each story has a tag
with it along the lines of "Avg. Rating: 4.6"

Same with the "Most Recommended Photos" -- Avg. Rating: 4.1

You can do the same for particular categories of news stories such as
"Most Recommended Business News" (which includes Finance, of course),
which, at the time I checked it, had this as the #1 story, according
to viewer rankings:

=====
Broker accused of insider trading
Reuters - Wed Nov 23, 7:39 PM ET
 Avg. Rating: 4.4

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The FBI has arrested a former
stockbroker and accused him of insider trading using stolen advance
copies of Business Week magazine, according to a court complaint
released on Wednesday...
=====

Is this the sort of thing you're looking for?

It's quite different from, say, reddit.com, but it certainly is a
content ranking scheme.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks. I am aware of yahoo and should have mentioned it in the
question. I am more interested in sites where users create or submit
the content and users also rank the content.

Hello apple18-ga,

This was an interesting and challenging search project since there is
quite a lot of activity in the field of user ranking of website
content and user-contributed content. Some of the related trends and
technologies are social bookmarking, collaborative filtering and
implementation of various recommendation systems.

I?ve collected a variety of links for you using your examples as the
jump-off point for the search. I?ve grouped my findings according to
your stated priorities. I?ve also included some general resources to
help you continue your explorations. Please be sure to ask for
clarification if anything about my results is confusing.

Wishing you well for your project.

Objectives and Content
From its inception, the site has aimed to be a "photography learning
community", in which more experienced photographers, both avid
amateurs and professional, provide mutual support, as well as being a
resource for those interested in learning about photography. Since the
site has been in existence since 1995, it is common to find
contributors on the site who are now experts but who first visited the
site years ago to ask beginner questions.

The most prominent sections of the site are forums and galleries
featuring member-contributed photos and writing. Volunteer moderators
and editors are responsible for most of this content. (See our
Masthead.) The site also hosts active sections for classified ads, and
a "Neighbor" section with member ratings and feedback on photography
retailers and processing labs. The "ezShop" section features
member-contributed equipment reviews and comparative shopping, with
offers from photography retailers who sponsor photo.net. Almost all
the content on the site can be commented upon by members, and the
comments become a significant part of the content.

CurrentTV

Right now, at this moment in history, TV is the most powerful medium in the world.

Its reach and influence are unparalleled. It makes or breaks products
and politicians alike, paints our picture of the world, and glues our
culture together. And yet, who controls it? Now, you do.

This is our outpost in a locked-down television landscape. Here, the
channel goes two ways. Here, you are viewer and producer. Welcome to
Current.

We follow the global pulse via Google Current, a real-time view of
what the world's searching for, presented every half-hour around the
clock.

We call it viewer-created content, or VC2, and it's created in the
Current Studio, an online extension of our real studios in San
Francisco and LA. Anybody can join in to produce VC2 (and get paid for
it) or watch and vote for what goes on TV.

Social bookmarking

Social bookmarking is an activity performed over a computer network
that allows users to save and categorize (see folksonomy) a personal

as well as to subscribe to the lists of others. It's a tool for

-------------------------------------------------

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collaborative_filtering
Collaborative filtering

Collaborative filtering (CF) is the method of making automatic
predictions (filtering) about the interests of a user by collecting
taste information from many users (collaborating). The underlying
assumption of CF approach is that: Those who agreed in the past tend
to agree again in the future. For example, a collaborative filtering
or recommender system for music tastes could make predictions about
which music a user should like given a partial list of that user's
tastes (likes or dislikes). Note that these predictions are specific
to the user, but use information gleaned from many users. This differs
from the more simple approach of giving an average (non-specific)
score for each item of interest, for example based on its number of
votes.

Collaborative Filtering systems usually take two steps: 1.Looking for
users who share the same rating patterns with the active user (the
user who the prediction is for). 2.Use the ratings from those
like-minded users found in step 1 to calculate a prediction for the
active user.

***** You?re probably already familiar with many of the Commercial
Systems like Amazon, Netflix or TiVo. The list of Non-Commercial
Systems will give you additional sites to explore.

-------------------------------------------------

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recommendation_system
Recommendation Systems

Recommendation systems are programs which attempt to predict items
(movies, music, books, news, web pages) that a user may be interested
in, given some information about the user's profile. Often, this is
implemented as a collaborative filtering algorithm.
Recommendation systems work by collecting data from users, using a
combination of explicit and implicit methods.
