the two I'm interested is the US dollar and the Japanese yen.
however I don't just want the conversion rate I can get that for free.
I'm asking because I'm getting into anime and they buy things in yen.
wich makes sense beeing as that's their form of currency.
so what I want is more like this:
I know about the average prices of varios things in the US. when
someone is paying big money or getting a super deal on items.
like if i where to buy a new movie for $5 that would be cheep, or if
I was to see it sold for $50 I'd think the guy is overcharging. as I
know the average for that kind of movie is arround $20
also I know about how much varios jobs arround here make so I can tell
if the person pays up the $50 one just how much that's costing him.
since it would cost more for a person that only makes $8 and hour vs
someone who makes $20 and hour.

in that respect how does a yen relate to a dollar? I know I used a lot
of spefics while trying to explain but an aveage would do. kinda like
if I was to find a $5 dollar bill laying arround in the street I know
what I would think. how much yen would have to be there for a Japanese
person to think they found what to them would be a simular amout of
cash lying arrround.

Have a look at http://www.pricechecktokyo.com/foods.html This gives
you the prices in Yen of common food in Tokyo; and the menu on the
left side takes you to the cost of other goods & services. So, for
example, you'll see that the cheapest Starbucks Coffee is 290 Yen. So,
going back to your example, if 5 Dollars would buy you one-and-a-half
or two Starbucks coffees in the US (I'm guessing, as I'm in the UK)
then finding 500 or 600 Yen in the street might be about the same as
find 5 Dollars in the US. (One point of warning, I'm not sure when
this website of Japanese prices was last updated; but it may say if
you examine it closely.)

welll thanks that does help.

one thing that has annoyed me when watching anime when they would
mention price of something in yen, I'm never quite shure what that
means.

so having some basis of comparison is quite handy.
like this one scene in a show where this guy who's beeing protrayed as
kind of a cheepskate all of a sudden gives 10k yen to a charity and
they are shocked I was wondering what would that be like over here.
where they just shocked by the fact he gave the money or was it
because he gave a lot of money.
so by what your saying that would mean he gave $100 worth of cash
which would be a even bigger deal.
