Question ID: 597908
How can I connect the pc anywhere to my office computer. My office
computer is on a network & is a Host which is running minimized. I need to
know what to enter in this field: "Network Host PC to control or IP
Address."_______________________
At office the IP address is dynamic. I cannot seem to connect from my
home, but the software support can connect immediately. I do have all
the info regarding DNS, Subnet mask, IP address, etc. I just need to
know the sequence that I need to enter in the remote field. I have
tried everything in vain. I need an expert advise only. Serious answers only.

Hi Sanjay,

Did you follow the instructions exactly?

"For example, if the IP address of the computer is 216.64.42.16, then
the subnet is 216.64.42.255."

In other words, did you make the last three digits of your IP address "255"?

If that didn't work, did you try a Domain Naming Service?

hummer

Dear Hummer,
Yes I did try the last number 255, but did not work. How can I try
using DNS service ? Can you give me an example of what to enter in tat
particular field......somebody was telling me that I may have to enter
more than just the IP address...something
like.....abcd.com.00499phr0533.10.200.300.19 Does this make sense,
when I do something like this..it does scan the list of available on
host on that DNS or something like that... I need that sequence to
enter in that field.

Dear Feldersoft,
GO TO MY PCis not very good, specially for transferring files. Yes I
do have software firewall, running , but then I am able to connect to
all my relatives (Brother, cousins) without any problem, when infact
software firewall runs at both end & nobody even knows how to
configure it. I cannot only connect to my office only. Thats the
dilema.

Hope I clarified further.

Thanks for the comments guys

Hi Sanjay,

Domain Naming Services
"There are many free and fee-based Domain Naming Services available on
the Internet. These services allow you to select a name for the
computer, and then that name is pointed to the actual IP address of
the computer.
An example of a Domain Naming Service is DynIP. Information for
configuring DynIP to work with pcAnywhere can be found at the
following URL.
http://www.dynip.com/main/session//rsid//ns/26/doc/24/_ID/83
This service allows you to select a domain name (yourname.dynip.com)
that points to the static or dynamic IP address of the computer
through DynIP.com's applet. A 6 month trial copy of DynIP is included
on the pcAnywhere 11.0/11.5 installation CD in the Unsupported folder.
DynIP may be installed separately from this location or from the
Symantec pcAnywhere Custom Installation menu."

How to set-up pcAnywhere version 10.5 and 11 with DynIP

Good luck!

Thanks, Hummer
I think this is going too much in detail...which is out of my reach.
All I know that I am ble to connect to other (family members)
computers, but not to my office only. The software support company
can immediately connect to my office computer even though that is an
outsider company. I just simply want to know the sequence to enter. As
I always said I do have all the info that is required, but just do not
know how to put in place

thanks for comments

Dear Cynthia,
What you recommended is good, but I need something on an ongoing basis
& with no charge. Secondly I do not think my office computer allows
active x control to be downloaded, if it needs to be. But I will keep
this in mind.
Dear Lordmichael
Yes the IP is dynamic, but the software support are able to connect
anytime. But can you be more elaborate about dynip service. I have al
lthe info required (Read my first posted question). Can you help me as
to exactly what to enter in that field. How if anybody can sign up for
that service & can connect ? What else you need besides dynip
services. Please clarify further in detail

And I do not think there is any firewall software in computer, but
there are physical routers. What else needs to change in office
computer to allow or bypass if any security firewall (There is no
software firewall-I Confirm)

The office computer is running on Windows NT platform (Windows 2000 Professional )
Thanks Lordmichael

The only thing you should have to enter into that field is the IP
address of the machine your connecting to (your office machine).

However, you may have a few factors that are getting in the way.

1. If you have a software firewall, you need to make sure that it is
configured to allow the PC Anywhere traffic through.

2. If you have a broadband router, the address of your office machine
will most likely be something like 192.168.xxx.xxx If that is the
case you cannot use that address, but must use whatever address the
router has and you must configure port forwarding on the router to
send the traffic to your office PC.

If you are not committed to using PC Anywhere, might I suggest an alternative:

https://www.gotomypc.com/

It has a free trial and should take all the guesswork out of it.

If your IP is dynamic then you wont be able to connect to it. Just
signup for an account at www.dynip.com like was suggested, and install
the dyndns app as per the instructions. You will then be given a
domain, such as mysite.dynip.com, and this is what you will enter in
pcyanywhere as the computer to connect to.
If you have a firewall at the office, you also need to make sure that
it allows the appropriate ports for pcanywhere through.
If this is a wndows xp/2000/2003 machine in your office, you do not
even need pcanywhere, u can use remote desktop which is built in.

If you get totally disgusted and wish to try something new, go here:

LogMeIn
http://www.logmein.com

This is incredibly easy. Log into the web site, and then simply log
into your computer. Nothing to configure, no kidding. I can log into
my computer from any computer in the world without installing anything
on the local computer. Thanks again Sublime1!

Lordmichael,

Although I pay for the service, if you don't need to print FROM the
remote computer locally, the service is free. There is very little
difference between the Pro version and the Free version:

LogMeIn Free (free, secure remote access, 24/7, no limit on usage)

LogMeIn Pro (subscription-based paid service which includes secure
remote access, file transfer, file share, guest invite, remote to
local printing, etc.).
