I'm looking for this very old book - a children?s story.  I have no
idea what it is called, but I have a few guesses.  The book is about a
boy (Edward, or Ed)  who finds a winged seed.  "fluttering through the
air (or sky), something rather like a butterfly" ( I  believe was one
of the quotes - or at least close to it.), Anyway, he finds this seed,
plants it and it grows into a BIG tree, in which he climbs and on his
way up and in it, he finds a bunch of things like monkeys and other
odd animals like lions and such.  I do remember this: the
illustrations didn't match the descriptions in the text - like the
lions were purple and the text described them as orange or something
like that.   My guesses at the title of the book would be:
Edward and the tiny winged seed.
Edward and the giant tree.
Edward and the seed - or something like that.

Does this sound like your book?

This is a children's book about a boy who plants a winged seed. 
Overnight it grows into a big tree. An elevator comes down... I
remember an old fashioned kind and it had a plushy seat in it. It
takes him up into the tree where there is a house. The boy lives in
the house all year. He sweeps leaves and/or snow off the porch. He
skis on the branches. I think maybe lions come to visit in the summer.
I believe it would have been published in the late 60's or early 70's.
The book was fairly large, not thick."
